Inside Out 2 is full of emotions, just as we expected when the sequel to the beloved Pixar movie was announced. This is a story about a teenage girl going through puberty, after all, so of course it makes sense that a whole host of new emotions would be introduced. And yet, one new emotion that will be featured in the movie has taken us by surprise. Not just because it’s oddly accurate in a way some of us might not have expected. But because of the incredible voice talent behind it.
Nostalgia joins the Inside Out 2 party.
Riley, the same girl who was featured in the original Inside Out movie, is a teenager in the sequel. A teenager going through puberty, in fact. As she attempts to navigate this next stage of her life, it makes sense that she would be looking back at her childhood. And so, Disney and Pixar recently shared the newest emotion to join the rest of the Inside Out 2 cast: Nostalgia.
Nostalgia looks like a little old lady and is, obviously, nostalgic. So nostalgic that she exclaims in a new clip for the movie, “Remember when we all finally came up to headquarters?” at which point Ennui, voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos and the Frenchest of all the emotions, says, “That was, like 30 seconds ago, Nostalgia.”
“Yeah... those were the days,” she replies.
June Squibb voices Nostalgia.
Academy Award-nominated actress June Squibb voices Nostalgia, and honestly fans are generally pretty happy with the choice. “Amazing,” one person tweeted, while another added, “my fav character so far.” For those who might not recognize her, the 94-year-old actor is known for her roles in About Schmidt, Nebraska, and the upcoming grandma revenge movie Thelma. Squibb has also done voice work for animated movies like Ralph Breaks the Internet, Toy Story 4, and Soul.
She feels like a perfect fit for Nostalgia, who joins Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) as Riley’s new emotions. Nostalgia also appears to be the only emotion that shows up in a sepia tone, a nice touch.
Teenage girls consulted on all of the new emotions.
While there might be some people who doubt the inclusion of nostalgia as a realistic emotion felt by teenagers, this does not appear to be the case. Because a group of teenage girls were consulted regularly throughout the making of Inside Out 2, and they obviously know what they’re talking about.
Besides who doesn’t remember feeling a bit nostalgic for their childhood when the chaotic teen years took over? Those were the days... am I right?
Mandy Moore is about to become a mom of three. The This Is Us star announced that she and husband Taylor Goldsmith are expecting their third baby, and she’s excited to have a “Big Three” of her own.
On Friday, Moore shared a photo on Instagram of her two sons, 3-year-old Augustus “Gus” and 19-month-old Oscar “Ozzie,” both of whom she shares with Goldsmith, wearing t-shirts that read “Big” and “Middle.”
“Sometimes life imitates art,” the expectant mom wrote in the caption, going on to reference This Is Us by sharing that the “third in our own Big Three coming soon.” Fans of the series will remember that Moore played Rebecca Pearson, mom to Kevin, Randall, and Kate Pearson who were always called the “Big Three” on the show.
And just like the series, Moore went on to announce that she is going to be a mom to two sons and a daughter. “Can’t wait for these boys to have a baby sister,” she added in the caption, and her fans made it clear in the comment section that they couldn’t be more excited for her.
“Your own Big Three! It’s even 2 boys and 1 girl,” wrote one fan, while another recalled the cute little saying from This Is Us, writing, “‘First came me and Dad said gee. Then came me and Mom said wee. Then came me and we said that's THREE; BIG 3!’ Congratulations!”
While Moore did not share details about her due date, she did open up to People last October about life with her family of four and building their own traditions and putting down roots. “I’m excited to settle in and put down roots and figure out what those traditions are going to be,” she said at the time. “Gus just started preschool, and I feel like with all of that comes new community and new things that you do together with new friends and whatnot. So I'm excited to just continue seeing where that leads us, and being home this year, I think, is going to be especially special.”
Moore is fortunate in that she already knows her son Gus, at least, likes being a big brother. She told Parents in 2022 that Gus had “actually been very sweet … and really gentle,” to little brother Ozzie. “And I’m excited to have these two boys so close in age, and hopefully, they’ll grow up to be best friends.”
Now they’ll have another best friend in their baby sister.
Are you a frequent flyer at your nail salon, or an avid DIY nail artist (whose manicures get done while sitting on your bathroom floor)? Either way, you no doubt have a few favorite colors you cycle between throughout the year — light colors for spring, darks for winter, you know. Well, this year’s summer nail trends are all about bright colors, bold designs, and edgy shapes. They’re perfect for your tropical beach getaway, a poolside staycation, or wherever you’re headed in this summer heat. Yes, your kids’ camp drop-off line is a good enough destination for fun nails, too.
Romper spoke with leaders in the nail care industry about what they expect to trend this summer. Some of their answers won’t shock you — neon hues, for example, are more popular than usual every summer — but others might take you by surprise (like the fact that square nails are officially back, baby). So, read on to see which summer nail trend you want to try first. And second, and third. Because hey, there is plenty of this sunny, sandy season left to try every neon color out there, and while you’re at it, a few bold graphic designs in between.
Square & Squoval Nails
The almond nail shape has reigned supreme for years now, but we are finally seeing a shift back to square tips (and, for those who prefer less of an edge, the more rounded squoval). “Natural nail shapes will continue with variations on squoval, which allows for extra length, ease of maintenance, and strength,” says Rebecca Isa, creative director of Zoya.
“This summer, we anticipate a blend of classic and modern shapes that cater to every preference. Almond and coffin-shaped nails will continue to be popular choices, offering elegance and sophistication. For those craving something edgier, stiletto and square shapes will make a comeback, adding a bold and dramatic touch to any manicure,” adds Rianna Basurto, director of marketing and brand development at Bellacures.
Chrome had its moment, and it paved the way for polishes with a subtler sheen to take center stage. “With bold, iridescent tones prevailing, the spirit of summer encourages experimentation when it comes to nail art with layering and embellishment,” says Jan Arnold, co-founder of CND.
Bold Neon Colors
I know, I know, I can hear Miranda Priestly’s voice now: “Neons, for summer? Groundbreaking.” But bright neon hues come back in style every single summer because no other colors enhance a good tan quite so beautifully.
“From neon pink to electric green, these eye-catching colors will make a statement wherever you go,” says Basurto. “Additionally, expect to see a resurgence of pastel tones, offering a softer and more whimsical alternative for those seeking a more understated yet stylish look.”
Besides, the brightness of the colors just matches the season, Arnold says. “This seasonal transition is reflected in our color palettes, evolving from cool and distant winter hues to playful pastels in spring, and finally to the highly charged and dynamic shades of summer.”
Negative Space Nail Art
When playing with big, bold colors, leaving some negative space on the nail can make them less overwhelming (especially when you’ll have them on your nails for weeks). Incorporate a little bit of your natural nail base into your next manicure, why don’t you?
“Negative space manicures will also gain traction, incorporating bare nails into intricate designs for a modern and minimalist look,” says Basurto.
Gradient nails will continue to be a popular choice, offering a seamless blend of colors that transition effortlessly from one shade to another. Metallic accents — like chunky glitters and chrome — will catch the summer sun nicely this season, too, according to Basurto.
Big, bold designs are in this summer according to all of these experts. “Geometric designs will take center stage, offering a modern and chic aesthetic that pairs perfectly with any outfit. Floral motifs will also bloom across nails, adding a touch of femininity and charm. For the more adventurous, graphic prints and animal-inspired designs will provide endless opportunities for self-expression and experimentation,” says Basurto.
Aura nails and blooming gel designs will both gain even more traction, says Nailboo Creator Lesley Stanger. “These have been trending over the last few months but rest assured they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The options are endless when it comes to the design and colors you can use. These are especially fun when mixing multiple colors and designs together for a funky mani that is sure to catch people’s attention. This summer, step outside of your comfort zone and try one of these trendy ideas for your nails!”
3-D Nail Art
If color alone isn’t doing it for you, take your nails into another dimension — like, the third dimension. With special gels and nail charms, your mani designs can quite literally reach new heights.
“You can achieve 3-D looks with both gel polish and dip powder, and again, the options are endless when it comes to the design and colors,” Stanger says. “I love seashell 3-D nails for the summer to create the perfect beachy mermaid nails. This is a fun way to add texture to the nails for a unique manicure.”
You may not want a raised design on your nail, but using glitters, you can still get lots of depth in your design. “We expect to see nail art utilizing both textured and neon glitters to create 3-D effects,” Isa says. “Neon glitters can be sponged over a pastel, textured glitters can be used as an off-centered dotted line in tone on tone colors. Crystal glitters can be applied to the free edge to create a disco ball French mani.”
Sure, you could stick to your favorite nude polish as usual. But wouldn’t it be fun to lean into one of these trends this summer?
Ever since Disney dropped a 15-second teaser trailer earlier this year, fans have been eagerly anticipating any more news on Moana 2, an animated sequel to the hit 2016 film. Now we have a longer teaser trailer that gives us more hints as to what our favorite way finder and larger-than-life demi-god are up to on their latest adventure.
Moana 2, not to be confused with the live-action remake of Moana, which will be coming out in the summer of 2026, will pick up where the last movie left off with Moana heeding an unexpected call from her ancestors to go on a high-seas adventure across Oceania. The full-length feature will “take audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers,” according to Disney.
While we still don’t know too much about the movie, including the case, we do know from IMDb that Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, and Alan Tudyk will all be reprising their roles as Moana, Maui, and Hei-Hei the hapless rooster respectively. And we do see the return of certain beloved characters, including Moana’s parents, the ferocious (if diminutive) kakamora, Pua the adorable pig. There’s also some new faces, including what appears to be a crew on Moana’s upgraded ship and, perhaps, a younger sibling for our heroine.
Some fans are planning family movie nights. “Gotta take my girls to see this,” tweets @Bidal4Life on X. “Moana had us in a chokehold tbh.”
Others are a bit dubious, with some wishing Disney would leave classics alone and stick to creating unique new properties without returning to the same sure-fire hits over and over.
“On the one hand, I really like the first one and I think there's potential in further exploring Polynesian mythology,” tweets @uchedible. “On the other hand, Disney's track record w/ sequels is hit-or-miss. Hopefully this one's fun.”
Honestly, if the script and music are even half as good as the original film, this will definitely be one worth seeing. In my experience, among parents, Moana is one movie we collectively don’t seem to mind our kids watching over and over again because it’s just so much fun. (Who here can honestly say they haven’t belted out “How Far I’ll Go” or “Shiny” in the shower?)
Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to find out! Moana 2 premieres in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024, the day before Thanksgiving. So go ahead and let everyone in your family chat know that you’ll be spending some part of the holiday weekend going to the movies.
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Woodstock, and the rest of the Peanuts gang are going to launch us into summer with a brand new, perfectly themed TV series. (And it might remind some of us of the 1977 movie Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown where the kids head off to Camp Remote and take on bullies in a river-raft race, just sayin’.) The upcoming Peanuts series, Camp Snoopy, premieres just as schools are out for summer and here’s everything you need to know.
What is Camp Snoopy about?
In Camp Snoopy, Charlie Brown heads off to Camp Spring Lake for summer camp with his friends, and of course Snoopy and his trusty Beagle Scouts tag along, too. Throughout the 10-part series, the whole Peanuts gang will explore the great outdoors with plenty of summer activities like fishing, roasting marshmallows, hiking, canoeing, and more.
“After discovering their troop is in danger of disbanding, Snoopy and the Beagle Scouts set off to the great outdoors to earn their badges,” the series’ logline reads. “Meanwhile, Charlie Brown and friends enjoy their summer at Camp Spring Lake.”
In the trailer, which was released on May 29, we see Snoopy doing his absolute darnedest to lead his scouts, even as their canoe springs a leak. We can also expect Charlie Brown to say his signature “good grief” and watch Sally, of course, get annoyed with everyone else.
When does Camp Snoopy premiere?
Camp Snoopy premieres just as summer activities kick off on Friday, June 14.
Director and executive producer Rob Boutilier told Animation MagazineCamp Snoopy’s 10 episodes will be a bit longer than usual, clocking in at about nine minutes each. “Some episodes are based purely on the adventures of Snoopy and the Beagle Scouts, some are of Snoopy crossing over into the kids’ summer camp to assist them, as a good Beagle Scout would, and some are kid-based stories with Snoopy and the birds in more of a supporting role,” Boutilier explained. “Spending just that little bit more time with Good Ol’ Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang made the series feel closer to the classic specials I grew up with.”
How can you watch Camp Snoopy?
Camp Snoopy will be available to stream on Apple TV+, the home of all Peanuts specials and series, on June 14.
Kourtney Kardashian’s baby boy is giving her quite the arm workout these days, but she doesn’t seem to mind one bit. While 6-month-old Rocky Thirteen, who The Kardashians star shares with her husband Travis Barker, has an adorable nursery adorned with designer accessories and funky stuffed animals, the mom of four revealed that he’s apparently “never” been in his crib since he was born.
In an Instagram Q&A over the weekend, Kardashian answered several questions from her followers, including one from a new mom who shared that her baby will only nap in her arms. “New mumma here,” the question began. “Any tips on a baby who only likes to be held to take a nap?”
Kardashian didn’t have much advice for this mom other than to just go with it and “enjoy” the moment. “Enjoy every second!” she responded in text over a photo of Rocky’s crib. “We do the same. He’s never been in his crib. It’s my favorite thing in the world.”
Kardashian, who is also mom to 14-year-old son Mason, 11-year-old daughter Penelope, and 9-year-old son Reign with her ex Scott Disick and stepmom to Barker’s three children, gave birth to Rocky in November, months after having “urgent” fetal surgery. During the season 5 premiere of The Kardashians, Kardashian described the experience as “terrifying” and said she needed to be on bedrest until Rocky was born because there was a “hole in the amniotic sac from where they had to go into the surgery.”
An understandably terrifying situation to go through, indeed and it’s clear she loves cuddling up with Rocky any moment she gets.
Since her little boy’s arrival last year, Kardashian has shared a few other glimpses into her life these days as a mom. For example, she shared that she’s been “obsessed” with her manual breast pump and also revealed that she drank her own breast milk when she was feeling sick earlier this year.
With the newest season of The Kardashians currently airing on Hulu, we’ll likely hear more about her last few months of her pregnancy with Rocky and perhaps a get a few more glimpses inside his nursery, even if he’s not spending any time in it.
Some of my favorite childhood memories are from sleepovers with my friends. A gaggle of us girls painting our nails and jamming out to Backstreet Boys could just have the absolute best time. But whether we were celebrating someone’s birthday or just having an impromptu Friday night in, there was never a shortage of slumber party snacks. There were always giant bowls of popcorn and candy (so much candy) to eat while we watched movies, a pan full of pizza rolls to grab from, and chips to munch on. Now that I’m the mom in charge of the midnight snack menu, I try to mix it up when I can, and this list of slumber party snacks is super helpful for that.
When your crew wants something a bit more substantial to snack on, things like sheet pan nachos and homemade mini corndogs are sure to hit the spot. On the sweeter side, there’s caramel popcorn, strawberry oat crumble bars, and banana chocolate muffins. You’ll also find delicious dips, classic snack mixes, and plenty more slumber party snack inspiration on this list. Serve up a smorgasbord of snacks all night long or just pick a couple to make after you run out of pizza — you really can’t go wrong.
Rice Krispie Treats
Rice Krispie treats are such a classic kid snack, and this recipe from Brown Eyed Baker is a fantastic one to make for a slumber party. This actually doubles as a fun sleepover activity because it’s so easy to put together and kids have a blast getting all sticky and gooey with the melted marshmallows.
Pizza Roll-Ups
While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with grabbing a bag of frozen pizza rolls for your kid’s next slumber party, this pizza roll-up recipe from Damn Delicious is almost as easy. Refrigerated crescent roll dough makes the crust and it’s filled with lots of gooey cheese and mini pepperonis.
Pretzel Bites
Bite-sized rounds of soft pretzels are sure to hit the spot with the slumber party crew around 10 p.m. when they’ve burned through their dinner energy and need a solid snack to munch on. Make these pretzel bites from Jessica In The Kitchen and set them out with plenty of mustard or ranch to dip them in. There are even instructions for how to turn them into cinnamon sugar bites if you prefer a sweet snack.
Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
Muffins aren’t just for breakfast, folks. These banana chocolate chip muffins from A Classic Twist in particular make fabulous slumber party snacks. They’ll satisfy a late-night sweet tooth and you can have leftovers (if there are any) for breakfast.
Caramel Popcorn
Jazz up the usual giant bowl of popcorn at a sleepover when you make this caramel popcorn from Wholefully. It’s super simple to make and can be kept in an air-tight container for two to three months, so you can make a batch to keep on hand for the next time your kids throw an impromptu slumber party in your lap after a karate tournament. (Surely that’s not just my kid, right?)
Peanut Butter Marshmallow Fluff Dip
I have seen many a dip platter wiped out by a group of hungry kids at a sleepover. With just four ingredients, this peanut butter marshmallow fluff dip from A Pretty Life in the Suburbs is easy to whip up on the fly and pairs great with things you probably already have in your fridge or pantry. Serve it with fresh fruit, some cookies, graham crackers, or whatever you have on hand.
Mac & Cheese Cups
Can’t you just imagine a gaggle of kiddos digging into these mac and cheese cups between rounds of video games? From Damn Delicious, they’re served in muffin cups, so they’re perfectly portioned out and easy to grab and snack on without stopping all the fun at a sleepover.
Sheet Pan Nachos
This recipe for sheet pan nachos from A Classic Twist is ridiculously easy to put together with ground meat, refried beans, plenty of cheese, and topped off with veggies and sour cream. Plus, it makes a lot, so it’s great for everyone to share. I have two pre-teen boys (Spoiler alert: they eat a ton) and this is my go-to group snack when they have friends come over.
Strawberry Oat Crumble Bars
When you make these strawberry oat crumble bars from Pinch Of Yum, you can serve something sweet at your kid’s next slumber party. Made with rolled oats, sunflower seed butter, sunflower seeds, maple syrup, and plenty of strawberry jam, it’s got ingredients you can feel good about serving to a group of little kids, but that they’ll actually want to eat.
Mini Corndogs
While I can understand the argument that a corndog is more of a meal than a snack, if you’re prepping slumber party snacks for older kids especially, surely you know how much they can eat. When the kids need some sustenance, make Damn Delicious’ mini corndogs and get ready to watch them disappear. Each corndog has half a hot dog on a stick with golden brown batter, so it’s filling, but not as much so as a regular-sized corndog.
Crockpot Queso Dip
Growing up in Texas, this was a slumber party snack staple. I don’t believe that I attended a single sleepover where there wasn’t a big crockpot of queso dip and a bag of chips left out for us in the kitchen. Make this recipe from Foodie Crush and be your kid’s slumber party hero.
Dill Pickle Snack Mix
I’ve yet to meet a kid who doesn’t love pickles — I’m sure they’re out there, but my kids just aren’t friends with any of them yet. In any case, I’m going to make this dill pickle snack mix from Averie Cooks for the next slumber party we host. It comes together in just five minutes with tons of crunch rice and corn cereal, pretzels, and crushed pita chips tossed in pickle juice, it just feels like a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
Nutella Energy Bites
Kids at a slumber party are likely already full of energy, but a little extra oomph from these Nutella energy bites from Gimme Some Oven won’t hurt. If anything, the oats, flax seeds, and chia seeds inside will just balance out all of the junk food they consume.
Sweet Potato Fries
A fresh batch of oven-baked sweet potato fries is a great way to sneak some veggies into your kid’s slumber party snack rotation. From Gimme Some Oven, these are lightly seasoned and come out perfectly crisp. Set out a few dips for the kids to choose from and they’re sure to devour the whole pan in no time.
Strawberry Banana Smoothies
Looking for a filling slumber party snack that’s not too heavy? Try these strawberry banana smoothies from Wholefully. Sweet, creamy, and refreshing, there’s also something inherently fun for kids about things made using a blender. Add a fun straw and watch them go literal bananas over these.
Cheddar Pigs In A Blanket
From Averie Cooks, these cheddar pigs in a blanket are a tried and true slumber party snacking delight. Mini franks and cheddar cheese are wrapped in crescent dough and cooked to golden perfection. Serve them with ketchup or mustard for dipping or just eat them plain. Plus, they also make a fantastic breakfast to have in the morning.
When you serve up these slumber party snacks at your kid’s next sleepover, it pretty much guarantees that it’s going to be their tastiest party yet.

Father’s Day, can really get you thinking. After all, what truly makes a father, and what makes one worth celebrating? Sometimes, it’s not blood or biology, but a deeper bond that grows because of love, caring, and concern. Biological fathers are typically celebrated on Father’s Day, but what about the dads who became a part of the family and took on an entirely new role as a stepfather? While you might not know what to say, that’s when having these Happy Father’s Day stepdad messages can allow you to express your love, gratitude, and respect for the person who literally stepped into this important family role.
As far as celebrating dear ol’ stepdad, there isn’t an actual day for it. The closest you can come to it is National Stepfamily Day, which is celebrated on September 16 each year. That doesn’t do much when you want to give your stepdad a shout out for being an amazing role model and loving father figure. That’s why you can shine a spotlight on your stepdad on Father’s Day as well as your dad with these Happy Father’s Day stepdad messages.
Because when it comes down to it, DNA doesn’t make a dad — love does.

It can be difficult to find the right words to express your concern when someone you know experiences the loss of a parent. Holidays like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day can be fraught. Instead of ignoring a hard situation, learn what the experts suggest you say on Father’s Day to someone who lost their dad.
“Particularly with a recent loss, this day can be very traumatic,” mental health counselor Dr. Joanne Frederick tells Romper. Planning ahead and asking how they plan to spend the day can be a helpful approach, according to Frederick.
What to say on Father’s Day to someone who has lost their dad
What to say to someone who has lost their dad on Father’s Day will depend on how close you are to that person. What you might say to a coworker — if anything — will look different than how you interact with your spouse.
Beyond saying the right words, it may be helpful to offer to do something special together to honor their father’s memory. “If you can't be there in person, send a cute memento that will remind them of their dad, perhaps a sports team they loved, a hobby, a favorite song, or anything that personalizes a memory for them,” Frederick suggests.
Simply letting them know that you care can go a long way, but if you’re in need of some inspiration, below are even more ideas for what to say on Father’s Day to someone who has lost their dad.
Simple, meaningful things to say to someone grieving on Father’s Day
I’m here for you.
My heart is with you today.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Thinking of you.
Honoring your dad’s memory today.
Sending you lots of love today.
Holding you close to my heart this Father’s Day.
I really miss your dad.
Remembering your amazing father today.
Your dad was just the best.
What to say to someone grieving on Father’s Day to acknowledge their loss
May your dad’s memory live on through you.
Your dad was one-of-a-kind and he is missed.
I’m sure today is hard and I’m so sorry.
My heart hurts for you.
My deepest condolences to you and your entire family this Father’s Day.
Your dad was such a joy and I know you miss him dearly.
Praying for comfort for you today on Father’s Day.
I know what a strong bond you shared with your dad and I’m very sorry for your loss.
I didn’t know your father well, but I know he must’ve been incredible to raise someone like you.
Take all the time you need to mourn today.
Your dad was so special and I know you miss him every day.
I know you miss him so much.
It’s OK not to feel OK today.
Words of support to say to someone grieving on Father’s Day
If you need to talk today, I’m here to listen.
What can I do to support you today?
I know nothing I can say will take away your hurt today, but please know that you are so loved.
Your dad would be so proud of the person you are today.
I don’t want to intrude, but I’m here if you need me.
Here if you need a shoulder to cry on today.
Are there any special memories of your dad that you’d like to share today?
Your dad loved you so much.
How can I help you honor your dad’s memory today?
Please know that I’m here for you today and every day.
May your dad’s spirit continue to guide you.
I’m here however you need me today.
While there are many things you can say to someone who has lost their dad on Father’s Day, one thing not to do is complain about your own father or family. “No matter how ‘bad’ you might think your father is, your grieving friend would change places in a heartbeat,” Frederick tells Romper. “It is insensitive to bring up any sentiments about not wanting to see or be with your father on Father's Day.”
When all else fails, aim for kindness. Something as simple as a kind word can mean so much.

Listen, when you’re newly postpartum and just trying to get out of the house, taking your baby on a walk is one of the easiest ways to do it. You don’t have to load them in and out of the car, you don’t have to spend any money when you get where you’re going. You can throw on a podcast, your baby will probably snooze — it’s great. But if you’re someone who wants to keep track of your steps, you’ve probably noticed your phone (sitting in the stroller cup holder) or your Apple Watch (pushing the stroller itself) aren’t accurately counting your steps. One mom, Ali Jayson, took it upon herself to fix that, building her very own app: Stroller Steps.
Whether you work out often and track your physical activity religiously, or you like to monitor your steps as a general way to make sure you’re moving enough each day, it is so irritating when your literal fitness tracker doesn’t count your steps. This is especially true when you’re postpartum, and walking is one of the first forms of exercise that’s safe to do (and getting out the door with a wee babe is no small feat). Apple Watches, FitBits, and Garmins all seem to miss steps when you’re not swinging your arms, but instead holding onto a stroller handle to push. Jayson noticed this on her first walk postpartum, so she bought a traditional pedometer to compare the steps it counted to her watch, which confirmed her suspicions. She took to forums online, where she found numerous active threads of other parents annoyed by the issue.
“They’re like, ‘I know I wasn’t getting credit,’ or, ‘It feels like if they weren’t tracked, they didn’t happen.’ Or some people are like, ‘I knew my stroller steps counted for more, but I wasn’t getting credit for them.’ The truth is they do count for more. You’re pushing sometimes a 20-pound stroller with a 15 to 35-pound baby. You are burning more calories in that instance, and tons of parents were missing that formula,” Jayson says. “Postpartum is a really challenging time, and you want the win, and you want to rely on the devices that you've come to rely on.”
Some of those parents online just gave up tracking their walks, while others actually pushed strollers one-handed and swung their Watch-bearing arm even harder to ensure their steps were logged (and usually ended up with some wrist pain in their pushing hand, Jayson says).
So, with her background in tech and design, she set about creating her own app for Apple Watch that accurately tracks steps and calories burned when the user is pushing a stroller, and adjusts those iconic rings accordingly. You can download it straight from the App Store and begin a 30-day free trial. You can start a walk with one tap directly from your Apple Watch face, and end the walk just as easily. The step counts and calories burned are then added to both Apple Health and your Apple Fitness Rings, so the data is available on your iPhone, too.
Stroller Steps launched in March 2024 and has already helped parents track over 4.2 million steps that Apple Watches would have lost otherwise. For now the app is exclusive to Apple Watch, but Jayson has already received requests to expand the app to an iPhone-compatible version, as well as one for FitBits and Garmin trackers. Once your free trial ends, Stroller Steps is 99 cents per month. You can learn more about how the app works at strollersteps.com or download it from the App Store.
We all know by now that Bluey is a show with as much to entertain adults as kids. Full of silly games and poignant life lessons, it’s a show with something for everyone. It also happens to be a show with Easter eggs in literally every episode. From hidden “long dogs” and tennis balls to cultural references that will fly over most kids’ heads like Stranger Things and Pink Floyd. (Muffin ecstatically and aggressively screaming “I am the Flamingo Queen” as an ode to Jim Morrison might be my favorite.) But not all of those references are geared towards adults. In fact, one is not only one kids will get, but they will be more likely to catch than most adults.
It can be found in the Season 3 episode “Phones.” Mort, aka Chilli’s dad, aka Granddad, comes to the city to visit with his daughter’s family. It’s been a while since he’s been there and is quickly taken aback by all the changes since the last time he was there. Specifically, he’s somewhat baffled by the reliance on cell phones and apps. This bleeds into the game Bluey and Bingo are playing, and ask Mort to join in.
Their playroom is set up with a pretend restaurant and a blanket fort. Mort is in the fort — it’s not his house, but one he’s renting from another family via an app.
“It’s not my house?” he asks Bluey.
“It’s theirs!” she says cheerily, pointing to a picture in the tent. But a close look shows that they are not just any owners, but children’s entertainer/newly-minted EDM legends The Wiggles, the Australian kids group that many a Gen-Z/Gen-Alpha kid has grown up on.
Decked out in the group’s iconic colorful shirts, we see The Wiggles have been “Blueyfied.” Everyone is a dog! And lest anyone thought this was mere coincidence, the picture is signed with the group’s names: Lachy Wiggle (Lachlan Gillespie), Emma Wiggle (Emma Watkins), Simon Wiggle (Simon Pryce), and Anthony Wiggle (Anthony Field).
The show even thanks the group in the credits.
You love to see it, especially in an episode about how, in a rapidly changing world, little kids are always going to be pretty much the same. (“Kids are still kids,” is, in fact, the last line of the episode.) It just goes to show that Bluey creator Joe Brumm and the team at Bluey are not only aware of the entertainers who paved the way for them, but want to pay tribute to the iconic Australian children’s entertainers who have come before.
