Over 30 years ago, Charlie Brown was ringing in 1986 with Tolstoy's War and Peace. Fast-forward to 2021 and we’re still ringing in the New Year with Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang. So how can you watch Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! in 2021? Here’s everything you need to know as well as some fun details about a brand new New Year’s Eve Peanuts special coming out this year.
You Can Stream Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!
As was the case with the Charlie Brown Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas specials, Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! has moved to Apple TV+. "It’s the night of Peppermint Patty’s New Year’s Eve bash, but Charlie Brown has to write a book report about War and Peace," Apple's description of the special reads. "Hoping to join the fun for a special dance with the Little Red-Haired Girl, he tries desperately to finish in time."
If you don't already have a subscription, which starts at $4.99 a month, you can check out the service for free for seven days.
In 2018, Apple acquired the rights to the Peanuts content, taking the specials off TV, and part of the deal will include brand new holiday specials. According to a press release from earlier this year, Apple TV+, Peanuts Worldwide, Lee Mendelson Film Production, and WildBrain are working to create "new original series and specials," including one for New Year's Eve, Mother's Day, Earth Day, and Back To School.
The Special Will Not Air On TV
Currently, there are no listings that show Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! will on TV in 2021. But A Charlie Brown Christmas will air on PBS and PBS Kids on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
A Brand New Peanuts New Year’s Eve Special Premieres In 2021
After you’ve finished watching Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!, keep the Peanuts’ celebration going up with For Auld Lang Syne. This is the first Peanuts TV special without Charlie Brown’s or Snoopy’s names in the title and the first holiday special following the Apple partnership, Variety reported. Written by Alex Galatis, Scott Montgomery and Clay Kaytis, the special will focus on Lucy throwing a New Year’s Eve party for the Peanuts gang after Charlie’s grandmother cannot visit. Meanwhile, Charlie wants to accomplish at least one of his resolutions by midnight. For Auld Lang Sync premieres on Dec. 10 on Apple TV+.
Although TV airings of the 1985 special aren't available, families can still enjoy watching Peppermint Patty’s New Year’s Eve bash and a brand new special to help them ring in the new year!
