It appears 2026 brings new beginnings for veteran Hong Kong star Eric Tsang (曾志偉). After months of rumours about his departure from TVB's General Manager position, the entertainer confirmed the news at the recent "TVB Anniversary Awards".
On 4th January 2026 (Sunday), TVB held their annual "TVB Anniversary Awards", celebrating the stars who've shone the most in the past year. Towards the end of the night, the award ceremony arranged a special tribute segment to present Eric with the "Glorious Legend of a Thousand Stars" honour, akin to a Lifetime Achievement Award.
TVB's Executive Chairman Thomas Hui To (許濤) initiated the segment. Meanwhile, Alan Tam (譚詠麟) presented the trophy after performing his song, "Friends". During his acceptance speech, Eric thanked TVB and the public for their support throughout his career. At the same time, he also announced that he's stepping down as General Manager.
Eric said, "Today, I feel I've run out of ideas, and it's time to step down and let the younger generation who have walked this path with me continue, carrying on the legacy of TVB and shouldering this responsibility." TVB later confirmed the departure and announced the star's appointment as the convener of the newly established advisory committee.
The 72-year-old began his duties as TVB's General Manager (Content Operations) in September 2021 after a brief stint as Deputy General Manager. He was also acting as a Special Adviser to the Executive Committee. During his tenure, Eric took on full responsibility for the station's content operations, including production, acquisition and program planning.
Rumours of Eric's departure began circulating in November 2025, with speculations that he would announce the news during the "TVB Anniversary Gala". However, at the time, the star denied the rumours and expressed his intention to stay in his position, and at the station, for the foreseeable future.
