Hollywood has lost another brilliant star. Earlier today (Friday, 20th February 2026), news outlets confirmed that American actor Eric Dane has passed away after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 53.
His family shared the devastating announcement in a statement, writing, "With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world."

Eric revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025 in an interview with People magazine. The condition, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rare degenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spine, causing progressive paralysis of the muscles. Patients with ALS slowly lose the ability to speak, eat, walk and breathe independently.
After publicising his diagnosis, Eric became a passionate advocate for ALS, expressing support for awareness and research on the disease. In December 2025, the actor joined the Target ALS Board of Directors. At the same time, he also expressed his wish to continue acting despite his failing health.

The late star is best known for his role in "Grey's Anatomy", playing Dr Mark Sloan, a.k.a. "McSteamy". In recent years, Eric appeared in various projects, including the 2025 movie "Borderline" and HBO's "Euphoria". He will posthumously make an appearance in the upcoming season of "Euphoria".
Fans and fellow celebrities have taken to social media to mourn Eric's passing and pay tribute to him. We extend our condolences to Eric's family and loved ones. May they find strength during this difficult time.
