Desaru Coast Strengthens Position As An International Sports Tourism Destination With WAGC World Final 2026

Desaru Coast is further strengthening its position as an international sports tourism destination with the hosting of the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) World Final 2026. Taking place from 23rd to 31st October 2026, the championship will bring together approximately 650 amateur golfers and delegates from more than 50 countries, highlighting Johor’s growing reputation as a golf tourism destination.

Izrin Hashim, Chief Executive Officer of Desaru Development Holdings One Sdn Bhd, said the destination was designed to become a hub for tourism, lifestyle and international events. “From the beginning, our ambition has been to build a destination capable of attracting world-class events, driving tourism growth and creating long-term economic value for Johor. Over the years, we have established Desaru Coast as a leading sports tourism destination through the successful hosting of internationally recognised events such as IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast and L’Étape Malaysia by Tour de France. Complementing these marquee events is a thriving calendar of cycling gatherings, automotive club drives, fitness bootcamps and active lifestyle experiences that continue to attract visitors throughout the year.”

He said the hosting of the WAGC World Final 2026 reflects the confidence that international event organisers have in Desaru Coast’s facilities, hospitality offering and ability to deliver memorable experiences for participants and visitors alike. “We are delighted to welcome the WAGC World Final 2026 to Desaru Coast. It is a privilege to host a championship of this calibre and showcase the best of what Johor has to offer to a global audience.”

Izrin added that the championship builds on a growing calendar of international sporting events at Desaru Coast, including the upcoming Desaru Coast Multisports Festival presented by IRONMAN in July. “The festival is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants and supporters from across the region, reflecting growing interest in Desaru Coast as a destination for sports tourism and active lifestyle experiences. Together, these events demonstrate the breadth of our sports tourism offering and reinforce our ambition to become one of Asia’s leading destinations for international sporting events.”

He said the championship also supports the aspirations of Visit Johor Year 2026 by bringing international attention to Johor and Desaru Coast. “The WAGC World Final provides an important platform to showcase Johor’s tourism assets while creating tangible economic benefits for local businesses and communities.”
