While comebacks are common, it’s rare to hear of a star returning to the entertainment industry after decades away from the spotlight. Earlier this week, Hong Kong star Cecilia Yiu Ching Ching (姚正菁) announced she’s returning to acting after more than 30 years.
The actress recently attended a press conference in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui to announce that she has formally signed with the newly established New World Entertainment for her return to the entertainment industry. Cecilia debuted in 1986 after participating in TVB’s Miss Television pageant and retired from acting in 1995 after making a name for herself as a TVB actress.
During the press conference, the now-57-year-old explained her decision to resume her career. Cecilia said she had long thought about returning to showbiz but feared doing so after being away from the spotlight for so long. However, she felt encouraged to return thanks to her godbrother, the founder of New World Entertainment and her manager, Connie Lam.
While Cecilia did express concerns about readjusting to the industry after so long, she is undoubtedly excited to return. As for her comeback plans, the star confirmed that she has recorded a few songs and will be filming a music video. Besides singing, Cecilia also has plans to invest in short-form dramas and live streaming, highlighting her multifaceted approach.
At the event, the media also shifted attention to Cecilia’s past relationship with Aaron Kwok (郭富城). For those unaware, many regarded the star as the Cantopop icon’s first love and the couple reportedly dated for five years. Cecilia quipped that she had anticipated questions about her ex-boyfriend. However, she candidly said the relationship had long ended and that everything is in the past.
Some outlets also questioned whether she’s open to meeting Aaron in the future, to which Cecilia said she doesn’t object to working with him professionally. She also praised his work ethic, saying she recently saw him perform in Macau. However, the actress mentioned that the two haven’t been in contact in many years.
After her retirement in 1995, Cecilia married a businessman and had two daughters, currently aged 29 and 25. Her younger daughter was also a beauty pageant participant and previously competed in the Miss Chinese Canada pageant. Cecilia and her husband have since divorced, and the actress currently lives in Shanghai.
Given that it’s been a while since Cecilia was last in the spotlight, there’s no doubt that she’s nervous about returning to showbiz. Nevertheless, we wish the star all the best with her comeback, and we can’t wait to see what she has in store.
