If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably heard about the issue surrounding influencer Khairul Aming and his mobile billing information. Thankfully, Maxis is pursuing legal action against the perpetrator, but there is a bigger issue at hand.
To recap, earlier this week, Khairul Aming, whose real name is Khairul Amin Kamarulzaman, went viral after questioning how a Threads user had obtained details of his phone bill. The user posted purported details about the entrepreneur’s phone bill, quipping that he has an overdue amount. Khairul Aming was understandably upset over the breach of privacy, later calling Maxis out for an explanation on how his personal information was leaked.
Maxis would later respond to the viral post via a statement on its social media pages. The telecommunications company said it had identified the individual responsible for leaking Khairul Aming’s mobile billing information and will proceed to pursue legal action against the individual. Maxis also noted that it found no evidence of a wider compromise involving other subscribers, believing the issue was an isolated incident.
The company also issued an apology for the incident, reiterating its commitment to data privacy and protection of personal data. Meanwhile, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil also confirmed that he had met with Maxis representatives over the issue. The politician said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be directed to obtain a full report on the incident.
Khairul Aming has yet to issue a follow-up statement about the incident. However, the whole ordeal has sparked a discussion about data security in Malaysia. Some social media users alleged that the Thread users who shared the Rembayung owner’s personal information had obtained it from a website that also contained the details of other Malaysians. As such, many expressed shock over how easy it is to access one’s personal data.
The issue also called for stronger personal data protection laws. It’s worth noting that Malaysia have a law on data protection, namely the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, which regulates the processing of personal data in commercial transactions. However, locals and cybersecurity experts argue that more protection is needed to combat the increasing risk of cybercrimes.
For now, the government has urged the public to lodge reports with MCMC at aduan.mcmc.gov.my if they experience similar data leak incidents. What are your thoughts on this?
