Can You Be Allergic To Mosquito Bites? Skeeter Syndrome Is Serious

Mosquito bites are a nuisance for basically everybody. But for some people, the tiny bugs can present real health complications. So can you be allergic to mosquito bites, or are these bug bites simply irritating? Because anyone can be bitten by mosquitoes, it’s a good idea to know about potential reactions to their bites.

(If you are experiencing signs of anaphylaxis such as trouble breathing, swelling of the mouth and throat, or a drop in blood pressure, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.)

Ordinary Mosquito Bite Reaction

Having some sort of reaction to mosquito bites is common. “Most people have local reactions to mosquito bites, thought to be a result of sensitivity to proteins in the mosquito saliva,” Dr. Casey Curtis, Allergist/Immunologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, tells Romper. “These reactions typically consist of progressive local redness and swelling at the site of a bite over 1-2 days. These may resolve within a week or so.” Although they are annoying and often itchy, the vast majority of mosquito bites do not pose a serious health risk.

Signs Of An Allergic Reaction To Mosquito Bites

But can you be allergic to mosquito bites? “There are a wide range of reactions to mosquito bites, ranging from small itching spots or bumps to serious allergic reactions that require medical attention,” Dr. Allen Dozor, a professor of pediatrics and clinical public health at New York Medical College, tells Romper. “In general, the larger the reaction, the more serious.” In the case of mosquito bites, bigger is never better. “Most people will get small, local inflammatory reactions. If someone has a hypersensitivity to mosquito saliva (that's what people are reacting to), there will be a much larger reaction — the size of a quarter or bigger,” as Marc F. Goldstein, MD FAAAAI, FACAAI Medical Advisor with Curist, Chief of Allergy & Immunology at Pennsylvania Hospital (The University of Pennsylvania), tells Romper.

Additional signs you’re allergic to mosquito bites may appear as well. “If there are hives or bruising around the bites, if there is swelling in a larger area than just where the bites were, then the reaction of the body is more pronounced and may require more than just local creme or an antihistamine,” says Dr. Dozer. “If there is associated fever, and general malaise, this is more serious.” For the most part, a severe reaction to mosquito bites, sometimes known as “skeeter syndrome,” involves more symptoms than the appearance of one small, itchy bite mark.

If you can’t tell whether it’s an allergy or not, then consider getting tested by a specialist. “An allergist can actually do skin testing to determine if someone is allergic to [insect] strings or bites,” including mosquitos,” says Dr. Goldstein.

When To See A Doctor For Mosquito Bites

Severe reactions require medical attention right away. “A patient with a worrisome reaction such as throat swelling, itchiness in the throat, or severe swelling around the bite site should seek immediate medical attention,” Dr. James Kosko, pediatric otolaryngologist at Children’s Ear, Nose, Throat & Allergy in Orlando, Florida, tells Romper. “This is a true emergency and would be classified as an anaphylactic reaction. Patients that have this reaction should carry an epinephrine injector such as an EpiPen.” For the most part, severe allergic reactions to mosquito bites are exceedingly rare, but they do happen on occasion, as noted in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology. “Rarely, systemic allergic reactions which may include diffuse hives, wheezing, nausea/vomiting, low blood pressure, or passing out have been reported with mosquito bites,” says Dr. Curtis. “This would require discussion with an allergist for further evaluation.”

Location of the mosquito bite matters, too. “If the bite is on the face and causes a large amount of swelling, especially the face of a small child, we recommend following up with your provider to rule out other potential and more concerning diagnoses,” Sanjeev Jain, MD, PhD, board certified allergist and immunologist at Columbia Allergy, tells Romper.

Finally, if these serious reactions to mosquitos keep happening, that’s another reason to visit your physician. “For someone who has very strong and frequent reactions, they can seek treatment from an allergist to reduce their sensitivity using allergy shots which would desensitize them to the saliva,” says Dr. Goldstein. “I've mostly seen this for landscapers, for instance — people who have large and frequent exposure.” Dr. Goldstein does add that this is not a common treatment, and that not all allergists offer it.

How To Treat Mosquito Bites At Home

At-home mosquito bite remedies are plentiful. “My best advice is to try to leave the bite alone, try to avoid scratching it,” says Dr. Dozor. “This is easier said than done. Other suggestions include washing the area with soap and water, trying an ice pack on the bite, applying calamine lotion or other anti-itch creams, or taking over the counter antihistamines.” Over-the-counter allergy medications are also an option. “Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is a tried and true antihistamine used for allergic reactions. Patients may also use loratadine (Claritin) or ceftirizine (Zyrtec),” says Dr. Kosko.

Lastly, you can try to reduce the frequency of mosquito bites by staying inside when mosquitoes tend to be active (generally around dusk and dawn), as Dr. Kosko explains. If you are going out, then protect your littles with the best mosquito repellent for kids and babies, or use mosquito repellent wearables, such as shirts made with insect repellent.

In short, can you be allergic to mosquito bites? Yes, but very serious reactions tend to be rare, according to doctors.

YouTuber Piper Rockelle Responds After Pink Claimed She’s Being “Exploited”

YouTuber Piper Rockelle has responded to Pink’s assertion that the 14-year-old is being “exploited” by her parents. The “What About Us” Grammy winner and mother of two accused Piper’s mother of exploiting her after the teen shared photos of her in a bikini on her Instagram account. Piper quickly shut those claims down.

Piper is a 14-year-old musician, actor, and social media star with more than 4 million followers on Instagram, an account that is managed by her family. She often posts photos of herself, sometimes Disneyland, posing for photo shoots, or eating Krispy Kreme. And in mid-August, Piper posted a photo of herself posing in a bikini with the caption, “too pool for school.”

Pink, however, appears to have taken issue with it. On Twitter, the “So What” singer accused her parents of exploiting their teen daughter. “How many kids like Piper Rockelle are being exploited by their parents?” Pink tweeted on Aug. 29. “And at what point do the rest of us say...’this isn’t OK for a 13-year-old to be posing in a bikini whilst her MOTHER takes the photo?!?!’”

While some of Pink’s fans agreed with her take, others pointed out that Piper is free to wear what she wants. Two days later, while speaking to TMZ, Piper weighed in on the conversation and said isn’t forced to do or post anything. “The first thing I want everyone to know is that my mom doesn’t make me do anything,” she told TMZ. “Quite the opposite, I’m a kid who had a dream and my mom is amazing enough to help me live it out.”

Rockelle’s YouTube Channel, which has over 8 million subscribers, is full of prank videos, challenges (like where she becomes a lifeguard for a day), and music videos, all of which have millions of views.

“I don’t think Pink has ever seen one of my YouTube videos, because if she did, she’d see it’s just my friends and me having fun and acting like ourselves,” she told TMZ on Tuesday. “The content we make is the kind of stuff anyone can watch.”

And while speaking with TODAY on Aug. 30, Piper defended her decision to take the photos in the swimsuit. “There’s nothing wrong with being in a bikini,” she said. “Why do we shame people for that? Pictures of teenagers in bikinis having fun are not sexual. They’re only sexual if you view us that way.”

Piper and her family are very close, according to Tiger Beat, especially since her mom, Tiffany Rockelle, “raised her on her own.” Tiffany told TODAY that everything she does is in support of her daughter. “Since Piper was a child, she has had a strong love of performing and she has always had a dream,” she said. “So long as Piper wants to do this, and it’s her passion, I’m here for her to follow that dream and protect her.”

Pink has not publicly responded to Piper’s response to her tweet. Romper has also reached out to representatives for the singer for comment.

Will Kids Wear Masks In School Next Year? A State By State Guide

Between distance learning, hybrid schedules, and a return to in-person classes, if there’s one thing kids have become accustomed to in the past year, it’s being flexible — and wearing masks. And after a summer of relaxed Covid-19 health and safety protocols, now they might have to continue wearing face coverings during the upcoming school year. In a reversal of its previous recommendation, on July 27 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that fully vaccinated adults and kids should wear masks indoors. The news will likely change policies in some states and schools across the country who have spent the summer trying to create new health and safety protocols in advance of the 2021-22 school year.

The Pro Mask Argument

“We know masks work,” says Dr. Elizabeth Mack, division director of pediatric critical care and professor of pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. Throughout this past year, Dr. Mack has seen how well masks have mitigated the spread of coronavirus in children when applied in conjunction with good hygiene and social distancing. So her argument is, why stop masking now?

The latest CDC recommendation backs her up. On July 27, the CDC reversed its more relaxed policy (which supported maskless learning indoors for fully vaccinated students) announcing that it now recommends all teachers, staff, students, and visitors in K-12 schools to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

“There's no scientific evidence to suggest that the masking is damaging kids in any way,” she says. “There's actually a bunch of exercise tolerant studies that have examined whether it’s unhealthy to exercise in a mask. Certainly subjectively, it's harder to climb the stairs. It's harder to walk on a treadmill, that kind of thing. But it's not damaging.”

And, Dr. Mack also likes to point out the fact that children suffering from pediatric cancer have been masked for their whole course of therapy. “We like to forget that. We’ve been seeing masked kids for a long time and they do just fine with it. Masking kids is not new to child healthcare.”

The CDC backs her up. In the fall of 2020 in the midst of high community transmission of coronavirus, a study of 11 school districts in North Carolina found that minimal school-related transmission took place thanks to strictly adhered prevention strategies, including universal mask use and physical distancing and that the few outbreaks could be attributed to breaches in mask use.

The Argument For Dropping Masks

For anti-mask proponents the argument is less about science and more about parents knowing what’s best. Such is the case in Iowa where the Gov. Kim Reynolds said on Twitter that her state was "putting parents back in control of their child's education and protecting the rights of all Iowans to make their own health care decisions."

In North Carolina five days after the Biden administration told fully vaccinated Americans that they could shed their masks, parents staged a protest outside of Gov. Roy Cooper’s headquarters in May chanting “let them breathe,” The News & Observer reports.

In June, a similar outcry took place in Washington state. In the town of Enumclaw, on June 19, a group of parents protested the Washington State Department of Health’s student mask requirement, according to Komo News. “Schools must use this guidance regardless of the county or phase they are in of Governor Inslee’s Healthy Washington – Roadmap to Recovery plan,” the state’s Department of Health guidance states.

States that will not require masks in schools in fall 2021

Some state governors have been firm in their opposition to continuing masks in schools next year. Here are the states that have enacted legislation regarding mask mandates.

Arizona

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced in April that masks were no longer mandatory for students and staff at Arizona public schools, AZFamily.com reports. However, schools may choose to continue their own mask policies. But 10 districts in the state are going against that law and now they’re going to court, according to NPR.

Florida

On April 15, Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran announced that schools cannot have mandatory mask rules next year, according to the Herald-Tribune. Ten Florida counties, however, are defying the mask mandate ban, Forbes reports. On August 31, a Florida court sided with parents saying districts could institute mask mandates, the New York Times reports.

Iowa

On May 19, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law a rule that makes it illegal to require masks in schools, according to Iowa Public Radio. That said, masks are required on school buses, according to We Are Iowa.

Missouri

There is no mask requirement in Missouri, for schools or otherwise.

South Carolina

South Carolina schools cannot mandate masks due to a budget proviso passed earlier this year by the General Assembly, The State newspaper reports. Governor Henry McMaster has said kids “can’t learn” wearing masks, according to a Fox News interview. However, districts are fighting back. In Charleston, the County School Board just passed a vote to require masks at school, per The Charleston City Paper.

Texas

No masks will be required in Texas schools per Gov. Greg Abbott’s June 5 announcement, according to the Texas Tribune. However, in defiance of this rule, Dallas school leaders say students and staff will be required to wear masks, according to The Washington Post. President Biden has also told the Education Department to take action against governors who have banned universal masking, reports The Washington Post.

Utah

Gov. Spencer Cox has promised constituents that face coverings will not be required in schools next year, the Salt Lake Times Tribune reports.

West Virginia

On June 24, Governor Jim Justice and the West Virginia Department of Education lifted all mask mandates. Students may wear a mask if they choose, but they are not required by schools to do so, according to the Morgan Messenger.

States that will require masks to be worn at school in fall 2021

Some states have announced official rules for mask requirements. Here’s what states are included in that group.

Arkansas

Though mask mandates are illegal in Arkansas, 60 public schools are now requiring masks following a judge’s ruling preventing the state from enforcing a law banning schools from requiring masks, according to US News. Gov. Doug Ducey has threatened to withhold funding from districts that defy him, The Washington Post reports.

California

California has announced that it will continue requiring masks in schools, according to The New York Times. The choice contradicts the CDC’s new relaxed guidance which says children who have been vaccinated may go maskless.

Connecticut

Per a new executive order from the Governor, “Mask-wearing is required – regardless of vaccination status – in health care facilities, facilities housing vulnerable populations, public and private transit, correctional facilities, schools and child care centers,” per a Connecticut Health Team report.

Delaware

Effective August 16, Gov. John Carney has announced a new statewide mask mandate for all K-12 schools, according to Delaware.gov.

Hawaii

Hawaii has a statewide mask mandate. The state Education Department released new guidelines for reopening schools this fall which includes a call for mask wearing, according to Hawaii Now.

Kentucky

Due to the virus surge, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has reinstituted a mask mandate in K-12 Kentucky schools, “regardless of vaccination status for COVID-19,” AP reports.

Louisiana

As of August 2, Gov. John Bel Edwards has renewed an indoor mask mandate which now includes k-12 schools, according to The Office of the Governor website. The new mandate is in effect until September 1.

Massachusetts

A 9-1 vote Tuesday on August 24 by the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has turned the tide on masking in Massachusetts. Now K-12 school students will be required to mask up through October 1, according to WBUR.

New York

The new New York state Governor Kathy Hochul has declared that masks will be required for students and staff at all public schools, according to Yahoo! News.

Pennsylvania

On August 31, Gov. Tom Wolf mandated a new mask policy for K-12 schools and child care centers, the Post-Gazette reports. The new rule will take effect September 7.

Vermont

As of now, Vermont students will still be required to wear masks in schools regardless of vaccination status, according to the Burlington Free Press.

Washington

Washington state’s Department of Health has been very clear in its rules for next year: “Universal and correct use of cloth face coverings or masks helps prevent the spread of Covid-19 and is required for all school personnel, students, and visitors.”

States where schools have local authority on mask rules

Other states are moving more cautiously or handing over the power to determine face covering protocols to school districts. Here’s what’s going on in states that have yet to announce next year’s mask policies or have put it into the hands of individual school districts.

Alabama

Alabama lifted its statewide mask mandate in April, making each individual Local Education Agency responsible for mask rules moving forward, WSFA reports.

Alaska

Alaska has no state-wide school mask mandate. Mask rules are at the discretion of individual school districts.

Colorado

In Colorado students who have received a vaccine do not have to wear masks. The current Department of Health and the Environment regulations for the state say: “The order requires people in Colorado who are 11 years and older to wear a mask over their noses and mouths ... Preschool through grade 12 schools (including extracurricular activities) and child care centers and services; however, fully vaccinated individuals, including vaccinated children ages 16-18, in a classroom, cohort, or other group of children may remove masks where the teacher(s), caregiver(s), or other staff whose primary responsibility is education or childcare have provided proof of fully completed vaccination to their employer.”

Georgia

In defiance of Gov. Brain Kemp’s vow to not impose a statewide mask mandate, the city of Atlanta and many Georgia school districts have announced they will implement masks in schools next year, the AP reports.

Idaho

On May 21, Gov. Brad Little issued an executive order saying he opposed mandates but that the state should not usurp the authority of local school boards to require masks.

Indiana

Jurisdictions for mask protocols are at the direction of individual school districts, according to WFYI.

Kansas

In Kansas, mask policies are at the discretion of individual districts, Fox4KC reports.

Maine

School districts in Maine are allowed to make their own masking protocols for the 2021-22 school year, according to US News.

Maryland

Maryland ended its mask mandate on May 15. Maryland State Board of Education is working to mandate masks, the Washington Post reports. This emergency shift must be approved by the state’s Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review to go into effect.

Michigan

As of July 1, Michigan will no longer have a statewide indoor mask mandate, however, school districts can still make their mask rules.

Minnesota

Mask policies are up to individual school districts in Minnesota, according to Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

Mississippi

Without statewide orders, Mississippi schools will set their own mask policies next school year, Mississippi Today reports.

Montana

The Montana Office of Public Instruction superintendent has strongly recommended lifting the mask mandate for schools next year, reports NBC Montana. However, her recommendation has not been made official yet.

Nebraska

Gov. Pete Ricketts opposes mandating a new mask policy for schools, WOWT.com reports. For now, masking policies will be at school districts’ discretion.

Nevada

Nevada dropped its mask mandate for fully vaccinated individuals following federal guidance in May, according to the Review Journal. Individual school districts will make their own face covering policies for the 2021-22 year.

New Hampshire

There is no longer a state mask mandate in New Hampshire. Mask regulations are subject to school district rules.

New Jersey

Masks will no longer be required in school in New Jersey, according to NorthJersey.com. Districts can make their own rules

North Carolina

North Carolina school mask policies are at the local level, according to The News & Observer.

North Dakota

The Governor’s mask mandate was allowed to expire, reports KFYR TV, making individual school districts responsible for mask rules moving forward.

New Mexico

New Mexico is taking a school first approach and letting individual districts determine mask policies based on new reporting from KRQE.

Ohio

Gov. Mike DeWine announced in May that schools can make their own mask policies starting June 2, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s new law makes masking optional and states: “A board of education of a public school district or a technology center school district may only implement a mandate to wear a mask or any other medical device after consultation with the local county health department or city-county health department within the jurisdiction of where the board is located and when the jurisdiction of where the board is located is under a current state of emergency declared by the Governor,” KOCO News5 reports.

Oregon

Kerry Delf, Chief of Staff of Eugene School District 4J tells Romper that school districts will determine local protocols. “ It is not up to individual staff, students and families,” she says.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island will not require masks for teachers and students who are fully vaccinated, WPRI reports. That choice can be made at the school level.

South Dakota

The state of South Dakota has no statewide mask mandate. Continuing mask requirements will be up to individual school districts, KELO News reports.

Tennessee

Tennessee has no statewide mask mandate. Some schools, including Montgomery County, have already rescinded mask requirements for summer school, reports Clarksville Now, but mask rules remain on a case by case mandate per individual districts.

Virginia

On May 14, Gov. Ralph Northam lifted Virginia's universal indoor mask mandate.Based on Virginia Departments of Health and Education recommendations, school divisions will have “the ability to implement local mask policies based on community level conditions and public health recommendations.”

Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s Department of Health and Services has recommended the continued use of masks in schools. However, the decision is up to individual school districts as the state does not have a mask mandate.

Wyoming

Gov. Mark Gordon lifted Wyoming’s statewide mask requirement on March 16. By April 9, 10 of Wyoming’s 48 school districts had lifted mask requirements, the Star Tribune reported. Districts will determine face covering requirements for 2021-22.

Is It Safe To Color Your Toddler’s Hair?

Dr. Lawrence Barnard, board-certified neuromusculoskeletal specialist of Maxim Hair Restoration tells Romper that age matters, noting that your children’s hair is constantly changing up until about the age of 12, and that hair color on younger hair can cause long term damage.

And Dr. Anna H. Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist who serves on the advisory board for Smart Style Today, agrees. She tells Romper, “Generally hair dye contains chemicals that alter the health of the cuticle and should be avoided in children, particularly permanent hair dye.” She notes that while the chemicals found in hair dye aren’t a big deal to adults, with children, it’s not worth the risk.

“These often have hydrogen peroxides, ammonia, bleach, and sometimes contain a common cause of contact dermatitis known as paraphenylenediamine, which can cause bad reactions to the scalp that are itchy, and contribute to an allergic contact dermatitis. It is best to wait until a child is older to understand the effects of these chemicals, such as in high school.”

What Are Some Safe Hair Dye Alternatives For Toddlers?

So, if that’s the case, what kind of hair dye is safe for toddlers? Barnard notes that if your tiny tot wants to temporarily change their hair color, vegetable dyes and things like Kool Aid are a safe, temporary solution. If that’s not your style (or if you are worried about stains), wigs are cheap and plentiful, and kids love them.

Colorist Lisa Haley also suggests looking for hair chalk and avoiding any temporary hair sprays, as they can be caustic and flammable. "The chalks are great, and they show up even on dark hair. If your child has light hair, you can always use Kool Aid, but make sure when you wash it out, you do so gently. Both the chalks and Kool Aid have a tendency to tangle in the hair, making it vulnerable to breakage."

But again, just avoid real dyes. "The chemicals in color, even the temporary Manic Panic dyes, will damage the fine hair of your little dude or dudette. It's just not worth the risk," she adds.

For the most fun, especially on Halloween, Haley suggests trying a wig or clip-on extensions. Your kids can keep them in their dress-up kit for years to come, and they love the instant change it provides. This is a holiday about transformation and creativity, so go wild, but avoid the harsh dyes.

Viral Tweet Shows Why Texas' 6-Week Abortion Ban Is So Extreme

A controversial Texas law banning abortions at just six weeks — well before many women are even aware they are pregnant — took effect Wednesday after the U.S. Supreme Court failed to act on emergency appeals brought forth by reproductive rights advocates and abortion providers in the state. But as writer Lucy Huber noted in a series of viral tweets, Texas’ law will function as a near-total abortion ban for the many women who don’t learn they are pregnant until six weeks after their last menstrual cycle.

“To illustrate how insane a six-week abortion ban is: I did IVF and still did not know I was pregnant until 4.5 weeks,” Huber tweeted early Wednesday. “That's LITERALLY as early as you can possibly know and that's when you are PAYING someone to put an embryo in your body on a specific day and keep track of it.”

SB8 is without a doubt one of the strictest abortion bans in the country. Under the law, abortion providers “may not knowingly perform or induce an abortion on a pregnant woman” if “cardiac activity or the steady and repetitive rhythmic contraction of the fetal heart within the gestational sac” can be detected. Such activity is usually detectable around five and a half to six weeks after the pregnant person’s last period — or roughly two weeks after a missed period. While the law does allow for exemptions in situations of medical emergencies, it does not make exemptions for cases of rape or incest.

What makes Texas’ ban different from other laws attempting to ban abortion as soon as cardiac activity is detected is that it leaves enforcement of the law up to private individuals. Under the law, individuals are encouraged to sue abortion providers as well as any individual found to have aided a patient in securing abortion care after six weeks. Those who bring forth a successful lawsuit will be awarded $10,000.

“People are often surprised I got an ultrasound at five weeks because ALMOST NOBODY BUT IVF PATIENTS GETS THEM,” Huber tweeted Wednesday in an effort to drive home how rare it is to confirm a pregnancy before six weeks. “Most people aren't even seen by their OBGYN before six to eight weeks. So even if people COULD manage to find out they were pregnant at the first possible minute and schedule an abortion in less than two weeks, they would have to do so without even going to their own doctor and just having done a stick test.”

“But obviously, this is the point, right?” Huber continued. “A six-week abortion ban is a total abortion ban, because pretty much the only people who could reasonably get an abortion are people who very much want to be pregnant.”

While there are rare cases of women discovering they are pregnant early on in gestation despite not actively trying to conceive, Huber is on to something. In 2017, when Self magazine surveyed women about when they’d learned they were pregnant, every woman who reported discovering she was pregnant before six weeks also noted she was actively trying to get pregnant at the time. In contrast, all of the women who reported learning of their pregnancy after six weeks were actively trying to conceive.

But even if a person discovered they were pregnant at five weeks or even four and a half, general appointment wait times combined with the 24-hour waiting period Texas law mandates for all abortions could still prevent them from being able to secure an abortion before six weeks. In fact, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which joined Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights last month in filing an emergency request asking the Supreme Court to block SB8, has noted that somewhere between 85% to 90% of people who obtain abortions in Texas are at least six weeks along in their pregnancy when they do so.

Under Texas’ new law, none of those patients would be legally able to secure an abortion without now having to travel across state lines. “Meaning this law would prohibit nearly all abortions in the state,” the ACLU concluded.
