6 Weeks Pregnant: Many Don't Even Know They're Pregnant Yet

No matter what feelings and opinions you hold surrounding abortion, there is no denying that the topic is once again taking center stage in our country. As some states move forward with proposed laws that create barriers around abortion access and fulfillment, Texas has now imposed a law that can prohibit people from accessing an abortion once there’s a heartbeat discovered, which could be as soon as six weeks into a pregnancy. The change has many people feeling as though the right to make the personal decision to have an abortion, as allowed through the U.S. Supreme Court Roe V. Wade fight, might. . . not be so possible. As per Texas’ Senate Bill 8, people who help facilitate the act could be sued with thousands of dollars at stake. For many, the fear this information spreads is unquantifiable, and its implications potentially life-altering.

Just How Early Is Six Weeks Pregnant?

One reason the move from Texas, SB 8, is so concerning is the discussed emphasis on the six-week mark in a pregnancy. A little background: As per The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), eight weeks post implantation, we’re discussing an embryo; the time beyond nine weeks marks the shift to talking about a fetus. That said, a heartbeat can happen at six weeks, as shared in the Journal of Prenatal Medicine, and at times possibly a bit before then. But ask yourself, just how many people are closely monitoring a potential pregnancy at four, five, or six weeks after a last menstrual period? “Many people will know they are pregnant almost immediately after missing a period if they are tracking their cycles very closely,” says Dr. Melinda Henne, reproductive endocrinologist with Kindbody, service clinics in the fields of fertility, gynecology, and wellness. “However, it is more likely that women suspect pregnancy when they are 1 [to] 2 weeks late for their period and check a pregnancy test.” If a period doesn’t come when expected, pregnancy confirmation can arrive via a pregnancy test either at home or at the doctor’s office, Henne says.

How Can You Tell If You’re Six Weeks Pregnant?

But it’s not like the six-week ban means someone finds out they’re pregnant and then six weeks later decides to have an abortion. “Traditionally, pregnancy weeks are calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period,” Henne tells Romper. “However, this assumes a 28-day cycle. And pregnancy doesn’t actually happen until ovulation occurs, which is two weeks before a period. So, for women with a 28-day cycle, a person is estimated to be ‘four weeks pregnant’ about two weeks after ovulation. If cycles are longer than 28 days, weeks of pregnancy can be estimated by counting from the first day of the last period and subtracting the difference between their cycle and 28 days.” Henne offers an example: For a 35-day cycle, the amount of weeks pregnant on the day of a missed period is 5 weeks minus 7 days, which equals just four weeks.

Fair to say this can be complicated math? And conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which causes irregular periods, as per ACOG, may further muddle calculations as they can impact the regularity of a cycle. “Patients who have irregular cycles for any reason, including Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, have a more difficult time discovering they are pregnant because they don’t know when to expect a period, so they don’t know a period was missed,” Henne tells Romper. “Any suspicious symptoms, such as unusual spotting or cramping, or morning nausea should prompt a visit to their doctor who can confirm pregnancy with a urine or blood test. An ultrasound may be necessary to estimate how many weeks into pregnancy they are.”

What Does This All Mean For The Future?

Time will tell. But telling the exact timing around a pregnancy can be difficult. While eyes will be on the Supreme Court for actions, whether they support, block, or not stop restrictive abortion laws like this bill from Texas, many people will no doubt be paying close attention.

After 10 years of freedom, Shang-Chi’s father Wenwu has returned for his son. Except that Wenwu, or The Mandarin, is not only Shang-Chi’s father but also the leader of the legendary criminal terrorist organization known as Ten Rings. And, of course, he wants Shang-Chi to join him in his criminal enterprise. In fact, Shang-Chi’s spent all of his childhood training for this very moment, meaning Shang-Chi is not truly a mild-mannered unassuming car valet but a trained martial arts assassin.

The only problem? Shang-Chi has no interest in following in his father’s villainous footsteps. “I thought I could change my name, start a new life,” Shang-Chi says in the trailer. “But I could never escape his shadow.”

Where Is Margot Merrill Now? Bette Davis' Daughter Didn't Live With Her

Bette Davis was the mother to three children, though the 2017 miniseries by Ryan Murphy, Feud: Bette and Joan — chronicling the rivalry between legendary actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford — didn’t delve deeply into her relationships with all her kids. In the show, her eldest daughter, B.D., received the most screen time, and her son, Michael, never appeared at all. However, Davis’ youngest daughter, Margot, did briefly come up when Davis explained her family situation to her co-star Crawford in the series. Margot didn't live with her mother, instead spending her childhood in institutions where she could receive care that Davis could not provide herself. But where is the daughter of Bette Davis, Margot Merrill, now?

Margot Merrill’s Early Years

Born in 1951, Margot Merrill is still alive today. She was adopted by Davis and her fourth husband Gary Merrill shortly after she was born. Though she was a happy baby, by the time she was three years old, it became clear something was amiss. A trip to the doctor revealed that Margot was suffering from brain damage that must have occurred shortly after her birth. Though the family tried to take care of her themselves at first, Margot was eventually sent to a care facility called the Lochland School in Geneva, New York. That was where she remained for most of her life.

According to the Davis biography Dark Victory by Ed Sikov, Davis once said, "The most difficult day of my life was the day I was dressing Margot, three years old, in a sailor suit and a sailor hat [and told her] about the lovely school she was going to."

Childhood With Bette Davis

Though Margot was moved around throughout her life and had many visits home, she did not live with her mother again for any significant length of time. Davis wanted to bring Margot home once B.D. was married and Michael was away at school, but she didn't appear to be able to care for Margot on her own; their visits were allegedly often difficult and abruptly cut short. But in her memoir This 'N That, Davis painted a positive picture of her relationship with her younger daughter.

Margot is past thirty now. She has come home often, and our times together have been happy. On one of her birthdays, I took her to New York and pulled out all the stops — nightclubs, theaters, the works. Wherever we went I was asked for my autograph. In the car going back to the hotel, Margot said, 'Mummy, may I have your autograph?' Sometimes you laugh to keep from crying.

Davis removed Margot from Lochland in the 1960s and had her placed with several different families in Philadelphia before she finally settled at the Devereaux Foundation home in Santa Barbara. However, Margot was unhappy there, and the situation led to an argument between Davis and Margot’s adopted father, Merrill, who wanted her returned to Lochland. Davis supposedly said that he could take her there and pay for it if he wanted, which may have later led to Merrill accusing Davis of abandoning Margot, as reported in the book Bette and Joan: The Divine Feud by Shaun Considine.

Margot Merrill Today

Merrill did pay for Margot's care at Lochland until his death in 1990 and set up a trust to provide for her afterwards; it was managed by her brother, Michael Merrill. Davis did not include Margot or her older daughter B.D. in her will. Davis' reasons for doing so aren't clear, but Margot appears to have been well taken care of regardless. At the time of Dark Victory's publication in 2008, Margot was still living at Lochland. Her current situation is unclear, but it seems fair to assume that she continues to reside there now in her 70s.

Davis and Crawford's familial relationships aren't the central plot of Feud, but they are an integral component that ties into explaining who Davis and Crawford really were as women, humanizing the larger-than-life screen legends behind the ensuing feud. B.D. Hyman: Bette Davis’ Daughter

On Feud, Shipka portrays a young version of B.D. Hyman (born Barbara Davis Sherry, to Davis and her third husband William Grant Sherry), at the time of filming for What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, when her name was B.D. Merrill, having been adopted by her mother's fourth husband, Gary Merrill. While it's obvious enough just from watching the series that the two weren't close, B.D. is included in the series because (in real life) she was actually on set while all of the drama between her mother and Crawford was going down. As the series showed, Hyman had a part in the movie, with Davis having scored her daughter (then an aspiring actress) a brief cameo appearance as a neighbor girl in one scene.

Nowadays, Hyman is an author and evangelical pastor. A then 16-year-old Hyman had a falling out with her mother when she married a much older man (29-year-old Jeremy Hyman) in 1963, which led Davis to be estranged from her two grandchildren, Justin and J. Ashley Hyman. Over 20 years later, when Davis was in failing health, Hyman took a page out of Christina Crawford's book and published an unflattering memoir called My Mother's Keeper about growing up under her mother's allegedly abusive care.

In addition to her writing, Hyman also maintains her own YouTube channel for "The B.D. Hyman Ministry," where she espouses her evangelical beliefs, including a claim that her mother had practiced witchcraft and had put a "demonic" curse on her and her family.

Margot Mosher Merrill: Bette Davis’ Daughter

By the time Davis died in 1989, their relationship was irreparably damaged. The actress wrote out Hyman and her other daughter, Margot Mosher Merrill, from her will, ensuring they would receive nothing from her nearly $1 million estate: "I declare that I have intentionally and with full knowledge omitted to provide herein for my daughter, Margo, and my daughter, Barbara, and-or my grandsons, Ashley Hyman and Justin Hyman."

Margot, for her part, was adopted as an infant by Davis and her fourth husband. As a toddler, Margot was diagnosed with brain damage, resulting in developmental and mental disabilities. Davis attempted to care for her daughter, but she eventually relented and sent her away to Lochland School, a home for developmentally disabled children, where Margot has remained for the rest of her life.

Michael Merrill: Bette Davis’ Son

Michael Merrill (pictured above at a Bette Davis Centennial Tribute in 2008, alongside his mother's longtime personal assistant Kathryn Sermak) was also adopted while Davis was married to Merrill and is the last of the screen legend's three children. Michael refuted his sister's claims of abuse and remained Davis' only child to be represented in her will.

Davis' relationships with her children eerily mirror Crawford's in many ways. From similar falling-outs with their eldest daughters to the split between children who alleged they were abused and others who flat-out deny it, it's clear that Davis and Crawford might not have been so different after all, in some respects.
