What do you do when you don’t necessarily like the name your child has chosen for their baby? If you’re Colin Jost’s mom, you hang on. You don’t say that you don’t like the name, you just hint around at other suggestions that you think might be better. For days. Because Jost’s mom was not into his baby’s name, Cosmo, when she first heard it after wife Scarlett Johansson gave birth earlier this year. And she did her level best to get him to change his mind. Credit to her for perseverance.
The Black Widow star gave birth to her second child, a baby boy named Cosmo, on Aug. 18. This made her 7-year-old daughter Rose Dorothy, who she shares with ex-husband Romain Dauriac, a big sister. Cosmo’s birth came one day after his father, Saturday Night Live star Jost, told the world they were expecting. Now that Cosmo has arrived safely and everyone loves him very much, per his dad’s Instagram announcement, it’s time for his family to get accustomed to the new little guy. Even Jost’s mom, who apparently needs some help wrapping her head around his name. And was happy to suggest alternatives, Jost told Seth Meyers on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
“My mom, I would say, was slightly thrown by it and didn't quite understand it. I don't know if she thought it was kind of like a hippie thing?"
She also wanted to know if the name choice was written in stone, calling after a few days to ask the couple, “‘And, now, is it final? Like, did you submit the birth certificate?' And we're like, 'Oh, yeah, we did that at the hospital,'" Jost told Meyers. "She was like 'Oh okay, interesting. Because I was reading that there's also a name Cosimo with an "I" so that could also be an option. Maybe you call him Cosimo, that's his real name, but then you can call him still Cosmo.’”
Jost’s mom might be surprised to find that Cosmo is actually trending upwards in popular baby names, per Nameberry, so her grandson might see other little Cosmos on the playground. And to her credit, she did eventually warm to the name. Jost told Meyers that his mom called him to tell him, “I met someone. They said their uncle’s name is Cosmo so it is okay.”

There are definite pros and cons to celebrating Halloween with a baby. For example, you have complete control over their costume (hello, squishy avocado) but you have to push a stroller or carry them when you’re trick-or-treating. Figuring out age-appropriate Halloween treats for babies can also be a struggle. Should you let them nibble on candy? Can they have a sip of your delicious witch’s brew punch? Honestly, it can get pretty confusing if you don’t plan ahead.
Your baby may not be developmentally ready to eat candy, but that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy something sweet and fun on Halloween — you just have to think outside of the box a bit. Halloween treats for babies may not actually look like the sticky, sugar-filled concoctions your older kids relish this time of year. In reality, pretty much anything that’s outside of their normal menu of pureed fruits and veggies and themed for Halloween totally counts.
Things like pumpkin-shaped yogurt melts, fall smoothies, and bat-shaped pancakes are all exciting, baby-friendly options to try. Don’t let the healthy stuff derail your excitement, though, there are also some decidedly sweet (but safe) Halloween treats for babies you can serve as well. Read on for even more inspiration.
We only include products that have been independently selected by Romper's editorial team. However, we may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.
This Halloween treat for babies is especially amazing for little ones who are teething. A candy corn-themed popsicle that doubles as cool, soothing relief for teething pain? No tricks, all treat. Give this recipe for candy corn pudding pops from the No. 2 Pencil blog a try.
Use cookie cutters to stamp out Halloween shapes like bats, cats, spiders, ghosts, and pumpkins from tasty pancakes that your baby can eat as a treat on Halloween. This pumpkin pancake recipe from Mom on Timeout is a perfect one to make if you want to amp up the fall flavor factor with even more deliciousness.
Made with a base of pumpkin puree, bananas, and greek yogurt, this pumpkin pie smoothie recipe from All The Healthy Things can be a tasty Halloween treat for babies. If your baby is used to more bland foods, you can go easy on the pumpkin pie spice, or even skip the maple syrup, and still give them something frosty and fun to celebrate with. Bonus points if you serve their smoothie in a Halloween-themed kids cup.
These oh-so-fluffy and incredibly adorable ghost meringues from Kitchen Confidante are a whipped, airy sweet treat that babies can indulge in on Halloween. They’re made using only egg whites and sugar, so they’re easy for babies to gnaw on with just their gums and they’ll dissolve rather quickly.
Another Halloween dessert-like treat that babies can enjoy is a pumpkin mousse. This recipe from Dr. Davinah’s Eats combines pumpkin puree with cream cheese and heavy cream that whips up into a fluffy mousse your baby can enjoy by the spoonful
How easy and adorable are these Halloween boo-nanas from Eating Richly? If your baby is already a pro banana eater, this is a simple way to dress up their favorite snack for Halloween. Even if you’re not sure they’re ready to consume the mini-chocolate chip eyes, you could use a tiny bit of black frosting on a toothpick to achieve a similar look.
Use your baby’s favorite yogurt to make your own frozen yogurt melts in the shape of pumpkins. Simply add whatever yogurt they enjoy into a silicone pumpkin mold and pop them in the freezer. Once they’re solid, they should slip right out of the mold for a sweet Halloween treat your baby can get messy with.
Let your baby dive face-first into a beautifully-layered candy corn Jell-O cup this Halloween. Using pineapple and orange-flavored Jell-O with a whipped cream topping, the instructions on the Pretty Providence blog shows you step-by-step how to layer this Halloween treat.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s New York City visit marked their first trip away from their 2-year-old son Archie since the birth of his little sister Lilibet in June. A break from the kids might make for a romantic holiday, but that doesn’t mean the little ones aren’t top of mind for their parents. In fact, Prince Harry found a way to keep Archie close at hand with a sweet nod to his son in the most unlikely of places. His briefcase.
Harry and Meghan weren’t simply on a romantic holiday, of course. They met with leaders from around the world including Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield. The couple sat down with the Ambassador at the United Nations last Thursday to discuss important matters like Covid-19, racial justice, and mental health awareness, as Thomas-Greenfield tweeted, and they clearly meant business. Because Prince Harry was seen carrying a portfolio briefcase into the meeting.
A personalized briefcase at that, although not with his own name. Instead, the briefcase read “Archie’s papa,” so if he loses it people will know to return it to Archie’s papa.
I hope no one else at the UN had a child named Archie. Otherwise there could be some serious confusion. Maybe he should get it changed to “Lilibet and Archie’s papa,” then it would be safe for sure.
Prince Harry is following in his wife’s footsteps with his Archie-inspired briefcase. Meghan has worn constellation necklaces with both of her children’s signs during a Zoom meeting in the past, and of course she’s written a children’s book called The Bench that was inspired by Archie and Prince Harry’s relationship. She even managed to include a nod to Lilibet in her book.
Seeing Prince Harry’s sweet shout-out to his son is actually a rarity for the men in the royal family. While both Kate Middleton and the Duchess of Sussex have worn jewelry in honor of their children, it’s uncommon to see one of the dads join the party. So Prince Harry proudly carrying a briefcase to an important meeting at the United Nations as “Archie’s papa” is something of a moment for the men of the royal family. A reminder that fathers might want to share their pride in their kids as much as moms. With jewelry, t-shirts, or even briefcases.

What is the Halloween season without a full line-up of spooky specials, monstrous movies, and eerie episodes of our favorite shows? This year, one of the best places to watch scary (but not too scary) movies that are fun for the whole family is the second annual Disney+ Hallowstream line-up. In addition to reminding viewers of the classics already on the streaming service, Hallowstream will debut brand-new content featuring characters from Disney’s top franchises. Here’s everything you need to know.
In LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, which premieres Oct. 1, Poe Dameron and BB-8 crashland on Mustafar and find themselves in “Castle Vader,” a Sith luxury resort! There they are regaled with Sith-inspired stories about Kylo Ren, Darth Maul, and Luke Skywalker. As you can probably imagine based on the phrase “Sith luxury resort,” the stories are more silly than scary (this is the LEGO franchise we’re talking about – they’re pretty good with the jokes).
Muppets Haunted Mansion, premiering Oct. 8, is a delightful mashup of everyone’s favorite puppets with everyone’s favorite Disney parks ride! The Great Gonzo and Pepe the King Prawn are tasked with spending the night in a mansion haunted by the likes of Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, and the rest of the Muppet gang. Of course you can bet there will be lots of celebrity guest (because even celebrities are not immune to wanting meet Kermit) and original new songs!
Also premiering Oct. 8, Under Wraps is a remake of a 1997 movie of the same name. The story takes place a few days before Halloween when friends Gilbert, Marshall, and Amy accidentally resurrect a mummy! Can the return Harold (they name the mummy Harold, because why not) to his final resting place before midnight on Halloween?!
Based on the graphic novels of the same name by the master of PG horror, R.L. Stine, Just Beyond is a spooky-but-funny anthology series. Witches, alternate universes, strange creatures and ghostly happenings blend teen and tween culture with the paranormal for a show that is sure to please this Halloween season. All eight episodes will premiere on Oct. 13.
Christmas movies may claim to hold the top spot as our holiday favorites, but we Halloweenies know the truth, don’t we: creepy is where it’s at! From Hocus Pocus to Twitches, The Haunted Mansion to The Nightmare Before Christmas (totally counts as a Halloween movie!), the feature-length films alone can keep you entertained until the 31st. But for when you don’t have time for a 90-minute film, there are lots of shorts, episodes, and series to choose from as well.
Just click on the Halloween Collection on your Disney+ menu. There you’ll find your favorite Halloween episodes in one place, as well as series that aren’t strictly speaking about Halloween, but will scratch that eerie itch and fit the creepy vibe you’re going for just right!
For a fuller list of all the spooky content you can find on Disney+ this month, check out the platform’s Hallowstream line-up below.

The following is an excerpt from Mother Tongue: a mom magazine for the now.
I think about weed a lot. For the past seven years, I’ve followed, enjoyed, and reported on cannabis trends — from transdermal patches and turbine-powered farms to cannabis-friendly aerobics classes and the phenomenon of the stoner manicure. And in the last year, when every economy braced for devastating impact, I watched the cannabis industry flourish. Amid the increase in consumption, normalization, and legalization, I noticed something in particular: many moms in my life were bringing weed back into their lives.
My mom has long appreciated a low-dose edible before bed, but more of her friends were reaching out for product recommendations from her “weed expert” daughter. My grandma actually went to a dispensary for the first time last summer and no longer works on her collage crafts without her infused sour candies on hand. Even moms on TikTok made a trend out of the shared experience that is “coming back from the garage a better mom.”
At the most recent tally, 16 states (and counting) have legalized recreational, or “adult use,” cannabis for anyone over the age of 21. According to industry website Marijuana Business Daily, annual sales reports in key markets showed increases ranging from 10% to 50% in dispensary sales in 2020, and that’s during a year without tourism. Everyone got a little less intimidated and a little more curious about whether this plant really could replace a prescription drug; could finally resolve that particular, nagging pain; could help one cut back on alcohol for good, or loosen anxiety’s hold; could really make a person feel better, all around.
“Everyone” includes moms, of course, and, it turns out, everyone likes gummies. No smoke, no mess, no smell — plus a little sugary dopamine bump to kick off the gummy’s effects. This style of edible continues to dominate the category from state to state, proving that longtime devotees, doe-eyed rookies, and those who fall in between tend to enjoy cannabis in this form.
Yet shopping for them can get complicated. For starters, there’s the industry dedicated to CBD (cannabidiol), as in the CBD tinctures you can buy at grocery stores and ship to your home. Those are made from hemp plants, which contain low-potency CBD and less than 0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Hemp products can be sold like any other vitamin B supplement or green tea extract, regardless of state legalization status. Then there’s the adult-use industry of licensed farms and dispensaries, where you need to show your ID at check-in and products are made with cannabis plants containing far higher percentages of CBD and THC.
“Everyone” includes moms, of course, and, it turns out, everyone likes gummies.
Both CBD and THC are cannabinoids — two of the many chemical compounds in cannabis that interact with our body’s receptors. THC produces more noticeable psychoactive effects: the relaxed, sometimes silly, occasionally hungry feelings we associate with the traditional “high” of cannabis. CBD has anti-inflammatory and restorative effects, helping the body achieve homeostasis (essentially, feeling like you’re getting back to normal) by regulating systems like sleep cycles, metabolism, and muscle repair. Like many treatments in plant medicine, the effects of cannabis are most profound when taken in as close to a whole plant state as possible — meaning the more cannabinoids, the more impactful the effects. (I point this out to prepare the uninitiated among you for the likelihood that you will not feel as noticeable a shift in your state of mind or body with hemp-derived CBD as you would a cannabis-derived product containing CBD and a little THC.)
In light of these parallel realms of hemp CBD products and cannabis products with CBD and THC (the former are available to ship nationwide, and the latter only in legalized states), we’ve narrowed down the must-try gummies in both cases, considering sourcing methods, confection processes, quality of ingredients and the go-tos of our most trusted canna-moms.
Price: $34.95
Dosage: 25 mg CBD each
Quick take: The perfect starter edible for the CBD-curious.
When it comes to distinguishing quality CBD products from the crowd, look for brands like WYLD, who got their start as bestsellers in the strictly regulated adult-use market. It proves not only that they know how to make a tasty product with consistent effects, but that they are accustomed to far more serious testing and supply chain control than the average CBD company. You can expect a consistent, mild dose of calm from every chewy, fruity bite, but if it’s your first-first time, try it out on the weekend so you can assess the effects without extra stress.
“The day always starts to get to me by early afternoon. I’m a little less patient, more easily annoyed, and though I prefer to smoke, I can eat one of these gummies around 2 p.m. and just reset mentally.”
– Educator and mother of three in Portland, Oregon, age 41.
Price: $45
Dosage: 20 mg CBD each
Quick take: A luxurious, gilded take on gourmet gummies.
Lord Jones makes a variety of hemp-infused goodies, but their juicy, old-fashioned-style gumdrops, made with a blend of real blueberries, raspberries, and boysenberries, are their standout sweet. (Keep an eye out for their seasonal drops — including mouthwatering limited-edition releases like last holiday’s cranberry version.) A 20 mg gumdrop is a great standard dose for morning or midday — one will take the edge off without making you drowsy or giving you those third-cup-of-coffee jitters.
“I didn’t realize how little deep rest I was getting until I started taking these. I take one before bed when I haven’t gotten any restorative rest, or when I am looking to calm my nervous system. I will never not use them.”
– Consultant and mother of two in Asheville, North Carolina, age 55.
Price: $45
Dosage: 10 mg CBD each
Quick take: Highbrow delicacies for the herbal connoisseur.
There’s a difference between the honey in the McDonald’s to-go packets and a jar of raw honey from a local farmer’s market. Rose LA makes their edibles with the raw honey-equivalent of the cannabis extract world: fresh-pressed rosin. It makes for the purest, most potent CBD content, and thus, each of these 10 mg Turkish Delight-inspired treats feels more like a full 20 mg. Every release of new flavors is a culinary wonder — like “Ponche,” a botanical spin on a traditional Mexican punch made with persimmon, hibiscus flower, and tamarind.
“My job requires a lot of hands-on work, and raising a 14-year-old is a job in itself! Having anxiety only amplifies things, so one of these helps quiet the noise in my mind. I’ll take one whenever work and life collide and I need some help keeping my cool.”
– Nonprofit program coordinator and mother of one very independent preteen in Brooklyn, NY, age 32.
Price: $24-$30 (depending on dispensary)
Dosage: 5 mg CBD & 5 mg THC each
Sold in: Oregon
Quick take: When starter gummies no longer get the job done.
All edibles are made by adding cannabis concentrate or cannabis-infused butter/cooking oil to the recipe. Willamette Valley Alchemy is a renowned Oregon processor in the most connoisseur type of concentrate-consuming circles, so you can expect a consistently high-quality, full-bodied experience. Like a two-hour massage kind of relaxation, but the masseuse also has really good taste in music and aromatherapy. WVA’s strain-specific formulations mean that if you have a positive experience with one of those strains in flower form, you can look forward to similar effects via those gummies.
“I started with CBD-only hemp gummies, then I stopped feeling anything. My daughter bought me the CBD versions made with real cannabis from a dispensary, and even the first few I tried didn’t work for longer than a few weeks. I’ve been taking one of these before bed every night for almost a year now and haven’t needed to renew my Ambien prescription yet.”
– Paralegal and mother of two in Roseburg, Oregon, age 59.
Price: $16-$24
Dosage: 6 mg CBD & 2 mg THC each
Sold in: California
Quick take: Remove the fear of “too high” with a CBD-dominant ratio.
For anyone looking to mitigate the risk of too many effects — like feeling too spacey to function or having bloodshot eyes — a balanced CBD and THC dose is a consistently safe bet. The combination of cannabinoids can soften any anxious edges of THC and amplify the reparative qualities on the body, and this particular gummy is great for a light-handed mellow that won’t leave you questioning whether you can handle social interactions.
“They are super mild and CBD-forward, so I can eat them without fear of paranoia or anxiety. I'll eat one around dinnertime, and it kicks in about an hour before the kids go to bed. For me, it's the perfect blend of chilled out and aware, with a sprinkle of giggles.”
– Film editor and mother of two in Los Angeles, California, age 39.
Price: $30-$35
Dosage: 10 mg THC each
Sold in: Washington
Quick take: Proving a grown-up weed gummy can be as pretty as it is potent.
Each soft, chewy Pioneer Square gummy has a piece of real candied lemon in the center. The flavor burst tastes like summer, and the calming, happy high feels like summer, too. Although there isn’t notable CBD content, these edibles are made from quality cannabis plants that contain small amounts of a variety of cannabinoids (at a volume that brands don’t typically label on packages). Note that this 10 mg dosage means you really should wait two to three hours to assess effects before choosing to enjoy a second, delicious gummy. There’s also no harm in eating just half of one your first time and getting to know your tolerance bit by bit.
“I’ve consistently had great highs with these. I like to take them before going on a hike or when wandering through a new city while on vacation. The flavors are so tasty, too — I’d love to be able to buy uninfused versions!”
– Graphic designer and mother of one in Seattle, Washington, age 31.
