Are you prepared for some information that will rapidly age you? It’s been 26 years since American audiences first started watching Pokémon. (We’ll give you a moment.) Since 1998, Pokémon the Series fans followed the adventures of Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum and his partner Pikachu as they met new Pokémon, friends, and rivals. Last year, our journey with Ash came to an end when he achieved his dream of becoming a Pokémon World Champion. Now, for the first time, audiences will get a chance to tag along with two new protagonists — Liko and Roy — in Pokémon Horizons, which premiers on Netflix this week, on March 7, and we have an exclusive sneak peek!
This adventure begins with Liko, a quiet, shy, somewhat insecure young girl. Liko just arrived at Indigo Academy to become a Pokémon trainer and she’s quickly paired with her first Pokémon partner, Sprigatito. It isn’t long before she finds herself pursued by two rival factions: the Explorers, a mysterious group that’s extremely interested in the special pendant Liko’s grandma gave her, and the Rising Volt Tacklers, a lively band of Pokémon trainers who travel the world in an airship called the Brave Olivine. The ship is staffed by an offbeat but intrepid crew led by the brave and charismatic Friede and Captain Pikachu. (He has an adorable wee captain’s hat!) This series also introduces us to Roy and his partner Fuecoco, who are both blithely unaware of the important secret hiding within the ancient Poké ball he carries.
In Romper’s exclusive clip, we meet several of these new characters, including Liko, Sprigatito, the crew of the Brave Olivine, and the mysterious Amethio. Getting to know a new friend, Liko finds, isn’t always easy. But it might just be that the impulsive, devil-may-care Sprigatito might be just the right Pokémon to encourage Liko to come out of her shell and be more assertive.
The first look at the highly anticipated series debuted at Comic-Con last year. In a statement at the time, Taito Okiura, vice president of marketing for The Pokémon Company International said, “As we gear up for the upcoming release of Pokémon Horizons: The Series, we remain passionate about delivering animated content with captivating stories and lovable characters that appeal to fans across the globe.”
It’s rare to have a series that can truly be watched over generations of fans — sharing something with our little ones that we enjoyed as children is always a treat — and we’re excited to see where this new journey takes us.
Note: Spoilers for Season 28 of The Bachelor are ahead.
Things are getting serious on Season 28 of The Bachelor. This week, Joey Graziadei visited the hometowns of the remaining four women and while some might’ve been distracted by the fact that Daisy Kent basically lives on the set of a Hallmark movie (a Christmas tree farm, c’mon), most of Bachelor Nation was solely focused on Kelsey Anderson’s dad, Mark. So much so that they’re campaigning for the certified silver fox to become the next Golden Bachelor.
On this week’s episode, Joey traveled to Kelsey’s home in New Orleans to meet her family, including her siblings and her widowed father, Mark Anderson. Kelsey’s mother, Denise, tragically died in 2018 after a battle with breast cancer, which spread to her bones and liver. Kelsey has opened up to Joey several times throughout the season about her mother’s death has affected her and how difficult she imagines it’ll be to get married without her. She’s also said that whenever she sees butterflies, she sees it as a sign from her mother. “Right before I came on [the show], I was getting out of work,” she recalled, “and I saw butterflies in the middle of the city of New Orleans and that was kind of reassuring to me.”
As we see during her hometown date, Kelsey’s entire family keeps her mother’s memory alive, including her father who showed Joey an album full of photos of his late wife. Mark also has a candid conversation with Joey about “how do you know when you actually find the right one.” Joey’s answer “reassured” him, but it’s clear he’s still very much a protective father while also being supportive of whoever his daughter picks to be her partner. “I want all of you to feel that feeling I had with your mom,” he tells his daughter, “because it’s like the best thing in the world. And cue the tears...
So not only did Bachelor Nation think Kelsey’s dad is handsome as all get-out, fans were also touched by his love and kindness, making him an excellent candidate for the next season of TheGolden Bachelor.
Considering that he’s a private person whose daughter just happens to be on TV, we don’t know much about Mark Anderson, including whether he’s in a relationship or even interested in dating on television. But based on what we’ve learned from The Bachelor, we know that lives in Louisiana, he’s a father of five, and he’s a veteran. Kelsey previously shared on a one-on-one date with Joey that her parents met in the military. “They were both military officers and my mom, she was Soldier of the Year multiple times,” she said. He’s also very understanding of the process that is The Bachelor.
“I feel very, very happy and it was wonderful to see Kelsey, to see Joey and the connection that they have,” Mark said during this week’s episode. “I understand there’s still other women, but I think Joey will take care of Kelsey and I do hope she is engaged when she comes home.”
Sure, we’re still waiting for the first season of The Golden Bachelorette to air this fall, but ABC, Bachelor Nation has spoken.
I regret to inform you that the celebrities are at it again. In a recent interview on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, the host and his guest Bradley Cooper began swapping stories about being a dad to young daughters — Shepard’s kids, Lincoln and Delta, are almost 11 and 9, respectively, and Cooper’s daughter, Lea, is almost 7. Normally I find this endearing. I mean *gestures to the website I work for* parent-y news is my bread and butter and also my jam. But then the conversation steered into territory where I did not want to follow. Specifically, in Shepard and Cooper’s bathrooms.
During the episode, Cooper asked Shepard about his morning routine, opening the door for Shepard to go into detail, specifically talking about how after meditation, coffee and nicotine, and some journaling, “it’s poopy time.”
Well, I thought, that’s not strictly speaking necessary is it? Reader, neither was what followed.
“The girls start coming in and out,” Shepard said. “And I wonder, is this the same with Lea, where they sit and talk to me, like a foot away from me, and it’s terrible in there.”
“My bedroom is... the bathtub and toilet and bed are all in the same room. It’s 24/7, dude!” Cooper laughed. “There are no doors. The stairs go up and it’s all one floor.” Apparently, Lea will chat away with the Maestro star while he’s on the toilet as well. “We talk where I’m on the toilet, she’s in the bathtub. That’s sort of the go-to.”
Look, I’m sure any parent on the planet can tell you about at least one time a child tried to come into the bathroom. More likely, they can tell a story much like the one we’re hearing from Shepard and Cooper — kids sitting there watching you poop is often just part of the parenting gig. But we don’t need to hear about it from strangers. I don’t know which publicist told all these people this would be endearing but it’s not. (Conversely, where is the publicist who forgot to tell them it’s maybe not endearing? Have they just been out sick for the past five-ish years?)
Here’s a good rule: If I’ve never seen your butt (in person, Bradley: Nightmare Alley doesn’t count) then I don’t want to hear about the things you’ve done with it. If I have seen your butt, I still don’t want to hear too much about its various functions or who you’re with while that’s happening. And it’s not just butts. Anything bathroom related can just exit public celebrity discourse. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, don’t bathe your kids all you want, but also just maybe keep it to yourself. Meghan Trainor, sweetie, holding hands while you pee (but don’t poop) on your side-by-side toilets could have remained your special thing. Now, it will unfortunately haunt me to the end of my days. Kristen Bell, I love you, I don’t need to hear about your “anal worms.” There’s a fine line between relatable and oversharing and, bless your sweet hearts, you’ve all stepped over that line.
We all know everyone poops (and pees, and lots of folks get pinworms or hold off on daily bathing) but it’s still not something everyone wants to think about. Also, Bradley, you might want to build some walls soon. A thought — do with it what you will.
Barbie Girls of all ages have been excited for years about seeing their favorite fashion icon come to life in Barbie, the first non-animated film to feature the beloved character. Fortunately, the wait was worth it: the film grossed nearly $1.5 billion and was roundly lauded by critics and audiences alike and has been nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Song (both “What Was I Made For” and “I’m Just Ken”), and Best Supporting Actor and Actress. For those of you who want to watch the movie again ahead of the Big Night (or who haven’t watched yet because #Parenting), here’s how to stream Barbie from the comfort of your own Mojo DoJo Casa House.
Barbie is available to stream on Max right now.
Max, formerly HBO Max, is the home of all things Warner Bros. And since Barbie is a Warner Bros. film, that’s where the movie landed for streaming. As of Dec. 15, Barbie is officially available to stream exclusively on Max. You’ll a Max subscription to stream Barbie. You can sign up for an ad-supported plan for $9.99/month or $99.99/year, and ad-free plan for $15.99/month or $149.99/year, or an “ultimate ad-free” plan for $19.99/month or $199.99/year, which allows you to stream on a four devices at once.
Max does not offer a free trial for new subscribers, so you will have to commit to at least a month if you want to stream Barbie.
You can stream Barbie elsewhere, for a price.
If you don’t have Max, Barbie is also available to rent or purchase on digital movie platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu, among others. Prices vary, but generally fall around $5.99 for a rental and between $9.99 and $19.99 to buy.
What age is Barbie appropriate for?
While Barbie (the doll) is intended for school-aged children, Barbie (the movie) is courting an older audience. The PG-13 rating is due to “suggestive references and brief language.” That’s not to say you can’t bring your 9-year-old (I did!) — every child and family is different and “appropriate” is often fairly subjective, but it’s good to go into the experience, whether in theaters or streaming, knowing what you can expect. And now that Barbie is streaming, you can always pause or turn it off it becomes too much.
Now that Kailyn Lowry is a mom of seven, it seems she might have made the decision to call it quits with more children. Certainly she won’t be having any more children with her boyfriend Elijah Scott because he recently went in for a vasectomy, and the Teen Mom OG star was happy to report that “he survived” the ordeal.
Lowry welcomed twins with Scott, son Verse and daughter Valley, back in January, just one year after the couple welcomed son Rio together. As Lowry noted on her Instagram Story on Tuesday, this makes Scott a man who is “about to be 26 and has three children,” which is why he decided to get a vasectomy.
To be clear, Lowry herself, who is mom to four older sons from previous relationships — Isaac, 14; Lincoln, 10; Lux, 6; Creed, 3 — had already made the decision to have her tubes tied after the twins’ birth as well. She had a tubal ligation done after her twins were delivered, and shared on her Barely Famous podcast that she knew she was ready to call it quits to having more children. “I was signing the paperwork for the tubes, they were like, ‘You could have [several side effects],’” she told her listeners, per Us Weekly. “In the side effects they include regret. I was like, ‘Oh, seven kids, I would never regret this.’ I would be lying if I didn’t have quick glimmers of thought [after it was done].”
So when it came time for Scott to have a vasectomy, the couple were basically doubling down on no more kids.
Some of Lowry’s fans might have been surprised to find that she had really decided to stop having children, despite the fact that her oldest son Isaac did say prior to the twins’ birth that he wanted her to stop having kids because she would just have “more and more boys.” Lowry teased that she might want to have an eighth baby because her “daughter needs a sister,” and when an incredibly rude social media user asked her “when u gettin’ spayed?” Lowry shot back with, “Eh, maybe after I have triplets or quads.”
That will not be the case now, because Lowry and Scott have both made the decision to call it quits with more babies. Isaac must be so happy.
St. Patrick’s Day is a bit of a dark horse when it comes to celebrating with kids. Sure, McDonald’s brings back the Shamrock Shake for a few weeks and little ones can wear a green shirt to school or a cute little shamrock onesie at home. But let’s face it; what we really want is to just put on a fun kids’ show with St. Patrick’s Day episodes and get a half hour or so of relaxation. And with some luck of the Irish, we’ve found a bunch of them for you to stream right now.
St. Patrick’s Day is actually meant to be a day spent in honor of the patron saint of Ireland, Patrick, who drove the snakes out of his adopted country after being brought there as a slave in the 4th century. Not exactly a tale that lends itself to a kids’ show, but there are some creative geniuses out there who manage to make it work. Especially shows where they weave in the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and traditions we know and love from modern times.
Below you’ll find some of the best and most festive St. Patrick’s Day TV episodes that are kid-friendly and you can watch together as a family.
Puppy Dog Pals: “Somewhere Under The Rainbow”
— Disney Junior/ YouTube
There is one terribly important element of St. Patrick’s Day that the puppies cover in Season 3, Episode 11 of Puppy Dog Pals called “Somewhere Under The Rainbow” — food! Sweet little pugs Bingo and Rolly are on a mission in this episode to find a pot big enough to cook Bob’s Irish stew, and if you’ve ever had Irish stew you know it’s worth the effort these two go through to make sure Bob can cook his stew.
If ever there was a perfect combination to get kids interested in St. Patrick’s Day, it’s pug puppies and Irish stew. Trust me. Also please note the subtle reference to The Wizard Of Oz with the title. You have to hand it to the Puppy Dog Pals. They know what they’re doing.
Lincoln Loud has the opposite of the luck o’ the Irish in The Loud House: No Such Luck. He wants desperately to get out of attending his sisters’ many events and eventually manages to, simply because he is apparently bringing bad luck with him wherever he goes. Lincoln uses this to his advantage to get out of things he doesn’t want to do and, no big surprise here, his little white lie does not end up serving him well.
While this episode (Episode 14, Season 2), The Loud House is not billed specifically as a St. Patrick’s Day episode is still in the spirit of the lucky holiday. And best of all, kids love it.
Of course Timmy Turner’s Fairly Odd Parents Cosmo and Wanda would have a St. Patrick’s Day special. In Season 7, Episode 25, “Crocker Of Gold” sees Crocker, the famously fairy-obsessed teacher at Timmy’s school, suffer a bit of an accident that makes him suddenly obsessed with finding leprechauns instead of fairies. He heads off to Little Ireland in Dimmsdale to try to catch a leprechaun, where he finds Cosmo dressed as a leprechaun and telling his family about Leprechaunaka, a holiday combining Hannukah and St. Patrick’s Day. Crocker somehow gets his hand on a pot of gold from leprechauns called the McPunchies, it’s all very hilarious. And perfect for kids.
Any parent who wants to enjoy a little throwback nostalgia this St. Patrick’s Day with their tween will love Season 3, Episode 11 of Futurama, “The Luck Of The Fryrish.” The episode opens in the ‘70s with a young Phillip Fry being born and given a seven-leaf clover that affords him unbelievable luck. This episode flips all over the place, from the ‘80s where Fry hides his seven-leaf clover in a vault alongside his copy of The Breakfast Club. Flash forward to the year 3000 and Fry tries to find his seven-leaf clover with friends Leela and Bender. It’s a real adventure, especially when Fry realizes his brother Yancy might have stolen his good luck. And a fun trip down memory lane besides.
Of course the Teen Titans gang would want to do their best to catch a leprechaun in Season 4, Episode 13 of Teen Titans Go!, “The Gold Standard.” They want those three wishes they’ve heard a leprechaun will grant if you catch one. Beast Boy in particular becomes very interested in getting his hands on a pot of gold. They set a trap and they do catch someone; unfortunately they catch Robin. The Teen Titans want Robin to become a leprechaun, but it’s actually Beast Boy who gets his wish granted and becomes a leprechaun himself. Confusion ensues, of course.
Kudos to Doc McStuffins for actually choosing a different element of Irish culture than the old leprechaun in Season 3, Episode 22, “St. Patrick’s Day Dilemma.” Doc wins an Irish dancer doll who explains what St. Patrick’s Day actually means to her (after she comes to life in Doc’s toy room, of course). The Irish dancer explains that the holiday is all about music and dancing and wearing a twirly green dress.
They even decide to try out hosting a parade for the toys, which goes off like gangbusters. It’s one of the sweetest episode that introduces kids to lovely music and the lovely Irish lilt. Nothing wrong with that.
We’re always excited to see Minnie Mouse get her own moment to shine instead of playing her usual “girlfriend of” role alongside Mickey. Especially so in Season 2, Episode 6 of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, “Minnie’s Rainbow.” This episode sees Minnie discovering a rainbow outside the clubhouse that leads to a pot of gold that Donald Duck immediately wants to steal because, well, he’s Donald. The group goes on a treck to find the end of the rainbow with her friends, turning them into “rainbowers” and helping them along when they find themselves fooled by that pesky leprechaun. It’s a cute, colorful, musical taste of St. Patrick’s Day that kids will be happy to watch.
Watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie’s Rainbow, rated G, on Disney+.
The Garfield Show: “Lucky Charm”
— Netflix
Who would love St. Patrick’s Day more than Garfield? I mean, the Irish aren’t exactly known for their lasagna which is the charming cat’s all-time favorite, but still. Season 1, Episode 20 of The Garfield Show follows the beloved orange cat finding his very own pot of gold. He meets a leprechaun who promises him all sorts of good luck after he finds that pot of gold, which should mean lasagnas until the end of time you would think. Sadly, things don’t work out quite so well for Garfield. His good luck is not as good as he thinks... but hey, he still has John and Odie. So all’s well that ends well.
It seems 16-year-old Martin has met more than his match when he comes up against a leprechaun in Season 2, Episode 20 of Martin Mystery, “Rage Of The Leprechaun.” After Marvin comes to Martin and Diana at the Paranormal Center for help to stay away from this angry, volatile leprechaun he has escaped, the two mystery-lovers decide to take the case. They find out that Marvin has a special four-leaf clover that grants the person holding it limitless luck and the leprechaun wants it. Will the leprechaun get it back? Will Martin still help Marvin?
Like everything else about this show, it remains a mystery.
Linda Belcher really gets St. Patrick’s Day going right away in Season 10, Episode 16 of Bob’s Burgers, “Flat Top O’ The Morning To Ya.” The episode opens with the enthusiastic mom making corned beef hash, wearing a leprechaun t-shirt, and giving her husband Bob an “Irish coffee,” which she thinks is just corned beef hash in coffee.
Things go off the rails when the family tries to help a failed restaurant owner, but as ever the humor is understated and sweet and just a bit off-kilter. Another show for the older kids simply because there’s a bit of language and every once in a while some mature content. Mostly from the Belcher children.
Season 8, Episode 18 of The Simpsons, “Homer Vs. The 18th Amendment,” saw the townspeople of Springfield decide to bring prohibition back after a particularly wild St. Patrick’s Day parade in the town. Homer becomes an old-fashioned bootlegger, and of course everything falls apart in classic Simpsons fashion. Now, this episode will be a fun one for kids over the age of 12 since there is a whole lot of drinking beer and jokes about drinking beer going on, but it remains a classic for a reason. Also Lisa wears a green dress for the occasion so you know it’s a big deal.
Good things happen when Bugs Bunny packs his suitcase and digs under ground to take himself on a nice journey. Good for us, that is, not so much for the rabbit himself as he constantly is getting lost. In Looney Tunes: Leproconned, Bugs tries to dig his way to a nice holiday in sunny Hawaii, but somehow ends up in Ireland because I guess Google Maps doesn’t work under ground. There he immediately meets a feisty little leprechaun who, as ever, is worried Bugs is after his pot of gold. He proceeds to shoot a bunch of potatoes at Bugs which the rabbit turns into shepherd’s pie. In other words, they really go hard on the stereotypes. Which you might want to mention to your kids if you plan on watching.
St. Patrick’s Day can be a confusing one to know how to celebrate with kids. So why not make some sort of baked good with green icing, wear a complimentary green shirt, and watch one of these excellent television episodes. It’s not like you can really take them for a pint at the pub, right?
After weeks of speculation, Jason Kelce officially announced his plans to retire as center for the Philadelphia Eagles after 13 seasons. As the dad of three sat down for a press conference to talk about his storied career, he got emotional about the women in his life and how they helped to support him. When Kelce praised his mom Donna and wife Kylie through tears, it was a beautiful acknowledgment of all they had both done to help and encourage him in his career. And even more than that, his words confirmed that he sees and appreciates them both for the amazing women they are.
Kelce was first drafted in 2011 and has played with the Philadelphia Eagles for his entire career. He spoke emotionally about what his teammates have meant to him and everything his time with the NFL team has brought to him during his retirement speech. And one of the most amazing moments his time with the Eagles brought to him was meeting his future wife after a Christmas party in 2014.
“That night, I’d meet my future wife,” Kelce recalled through tears. “I still remember the moment she walked through the door.” He went on to describe meeting Kylie, calling her, “beautiful and smart, serious and playful.”
“It is no coincidence I have enjoyed the best years of my career with Kylie by my side,” he said, adding that she brought the best out in him, as well as “giving me three beautiful girls,” referencing 4-year-old daughter Wyatt, 3-year-old daughter Elliotte, and 1-year-old daughter Bennett. He thanks Kylie for giving him a “life that increasingly brings me more fulfillment off the field than it does on.”
As for Kelce’s mom Donna, who was at the press conference with the rest of the Kelce family including Jason’s brother Travis, he said, “I won’t forget my mother becoming mom of the NFL. A representative for all moms out there who have sacrificed so much for their children.”
Jason Kelce can often come across as a macho guy. A big guy, the guy who rips his shirt off at his brother’s football game when he drinks too much, the party guy. But he has proven to be another kind of man in his relationship with the women in his life. The man who sees them, who is grateful for them. The kind of man who cries in front of the entire world when he talks about his wife and his mom. And it’s beautiful.
