‘Abbott Elementary’ Cast Reveals How Real Life Inspired Hilarious Barbara Scene

Fans of Abbott Elementary are probably well aware that creator Quinta Brunson pulled from her own life as the daughter of a teacher to write the award-winning series. Brunson has spoken about this particular inspiration and what it meant to her to watch her mother as an educator on multiple occasions. But apparently her mother isn’t the only person inspiring pivotal scenes in the series. According to cast members, Brunson is pulling from their lives as well. And one particularly popular scene featuring Emmy award-winning Sheryl Lee Ralph came from Ralph herself. A celebrity who does not always know the names of celebrities.

During an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Brunson was joined by Ralph (Barbara Howard) and Lisa Ann Walter (Melissa Schemmenti). During the sit-down, Clarkson asked the stars about a previous claim from Tyler James Williams (Gregory Eddie), who told her that Brunson was dipping into his life for the series. Brunson protested, saying Williams was half right and half wrong.

“Tyler happens to be similar to Gregory,” Brunson explained. “He has his paths, he has his way he sees things, and he has his way he likes things done.” When it comes to Ralph, however, she “is completely right” that scenes she wrote were lifted from real life. Specifically, when it came to Ralph’s apparent struggle to recognize celebrity names.

“When you hear ‘Darren Star,’ tell me you don’t think of a six foot Black man,” Ralph said, referring to the (white) creator of Sex and the City. “You hear ‘Orlando Bloom,’ tell me you don’t think of a nice bruising football player. Black man! Okay, so I got it wrong!”

She certainly did, and Brunson couldn’t help using this hilarious moment for a cold open in Season 2 of Abbott Elementary that has since gone viral.

In the Episode 3 scene, the ever-perfect teacher Barbara Howard in the teacher’s lounge, where her fellow teachers are discussing the possibility of a Black Spider-Man and she puts her hat in the ring for “that Brian Austen Green. I’m so proud of that young man and all of his success.” When Gregory is about to correct her, Janine stops him, telling the camera, “so there are a bunch of white celebrities who Barbara thinks are Black. Like Brian Austen Green would be Brian Tyree Henry.”

Other celebrities she confuses? “I see you little Carrie Underwood,” she says to a young Black girl in her class, thinking of Kerry Washington. She wants to go home to listen to “Millie Bobby Brown,” thinking of Bobby Brown. She also believes that “no one has done more for Black actors than Tommy Lee Jones,” meaning legendary Black actor James Earl Jones.

Considering this is perhaps one of the funniest scenes in Abbott Elementary, we are all so grateful that Brunson did pull from Ralph’s life. Besides, she doesn’t seem genuinely bothered so I’m sure it’s all good.

Pregnant Sophia Grace Responds To Critics Who Say She's "Too Young" For A Baby

Fans of the Ellen show will recognize Sophia Grace Brownlee from years ago, when she and her cousin Rosie McClelland rose to fame for their rendition of “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj in 2011. The two British girls wowed Ellen DeGeneres again and again with their big personalities and talent as they returned to the show in their trademark tutus to perform more covers over the years. Now it’s just over 10 years later, and Sophia Grace is a 19-year-old influencer. Oh, and she’s also expecting her first baby. Which has some people criticizing her for being “too young” to become a mom.

Sophia Grace took to her popular YouTube channel to announce that she is pregnant, 21 weeks along in fact. “The reason I waited for so long was to make sure that everything is completely fine and that everything is safe.” She went on to admit that she was “shocked” to discover she was expecting, but that once she got accustomed to the idea she is “super, super happy about it.”

Sophia Grace will be raising her child with her longtime boyfriend, who she told E! she prefers not to name for privacy reasons.

After Sophia Grace shared her pregnancy with her followers, people started sharing their own opinions about it. Even going so far as to criticize her for being too young. And the expectant mom shared her response to those critics with E!.

“I feel like 19 is quite young, obviously, to have a baby,” she told the outlet. “Usually most people are like, ‘You should have babies when you're 30 and you're married and you live in your own house,' which is completely fine. But obviously everyone's gonna have their different opinions.”

She went on to say that she feels motherhood is “about the person themselves,” and “as long as you feel ready and it's something that you're happy about, then it's really no one else's problem.”

While some might have had concerns about Sophia Grace’s age, many of her followers were quick to offer congratulations and messages of support. “Congrats Sophia! I hope your journey goes well. your [sic] gonna be a great mom,” wrote one follower while another added, “You’re young but a baby is a blessing. Hope you have lots of support and a healthy pregnancy.”

Everyone’s pregnancy journey is different, this we know for sure. And if Sophia Grace is happy and feeling prepared, as she said, that’s a pretty beautiful thing.

Mandy Moore Is Eating Her Placenta In Pill Form After Baby #2's Birth

Mandy Moore is enjoying all the perks of being a new mom, including soaking up all the newborn cuddles and snapping sweet pictures of her snoozing baby. The This Is Us star recently joined the “2 under 2” club when she announced the birth of her second son Ozzie, who she shares with husband Taylor Goldsmith. While settling in at home with her little one, Moore shared some photos on social media of her cozy post-labor life. In addition to sharing an adorable snap of baby Ozzie, the actor and singer also revealed that she is eating her placenta again as part of her postpartum recovery plan.

Moore is no stranger to this recuperative practice intended to boost new mothers’ energy levels and ward off postpartum depression. After the birth of her first son Gus, she shared on the Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast that her decision to hop on the placenta-ingesting bandwagon was a blissful one. “You are completely smothered in just that feeling of, I have never felt higher, I have never felt this kind of love. It was like the world stopped again, and you’re not aware of anything else going on,” she said at the time. “I’m so glad I had [the placenta]. It was so beautiful.”

Since it worked out so well the first time, Moore unsurprisingly made the same decision to swallow her freeze-dried placenta after the birth of her second child too. In a recent carousel of pictures on her Instagram Stories, Moore posted a photo of little Ozzie napping in his swaddle. “All day,” she wrote over the precious picture. The new mom also shared a photo of the bottle of her placenta pills. “Round 2 with @feelgoodplacenta,” Moore wrote. The label on the bottle featured a tree logo read: “Made By You, For You. Filled With Your Placenta and a Whole Lot of Love.”

Mandy Moore shares pictures of her newborn Ozzie and a bottle of her placenta pills.

Other celeb moms to engage in the growing trend of eating your placenta include Hilary Duff, who opted for liquid convenience of a smoothie. Kim Kardashian, January Jones, Alicia Silverstone, Mayim Bialik, Holly Madison, Stacy Keibler and Gaby Hoffman also decided to pop these nutrient-dense pills.

While cooking and encapsulating your own organs might seem a little extreme for some, Moore is sticking with what works for her. To each her own afterbirth.

Priyanka Chopra Shares Sweet Photos From Baby Malti's First Diwali

Priyanka Chopra is a doting mama who loves to share her daughter’s big milestones on social media. From baby’s first summer to mastering tummy time, the actress and activist really seems to revel in giving her fans an inside look at her life as a first-time mom. Together with her husband Nick Jonas, the glowing mom celebrated Malti Marie’s first Diwali, the Hindu religious holiday also known as the Festival of Lights. While Chopra was a little late to post, she made up for the delay by sharing a shining carousel of pictures from the special day.

In a recent Instagram post, Chopra uploaded several photos showing how holiday celebrations are a family affair in the Jonas household. Of course, Malti’s proud dad was also right by her side to round out the holiday pictures. Everyone looked gorgeous and in great spirits, decked in celebratory white. Malti, of course stole the cuteness spotlight, dressed in a precious top and long skirt, along with a delicate flower headband. Several of the photos included images of Chopra’s mom, who also happens to be half of the inspiration for her granddaughter’s name. Along with tasty food and an incredibly decorated poolside display, it looked like a beautiful day to make lasting memories.

“Love, peace and prosperity to all. From a heart truly laden with gratitude, I wish you all a Happy Diwali. Sorry I’m a little late but decided to stay in the moment just a little bit longer..ॐ नमः शिवायFrom ours to yours.Love and light🪔🙏🏽❤️PS: missed u @siddharthchopra89,” Chopra captioned the post.

Other celeb mamas like Mindy Kaling also enjoyed the holiday with her kids at school. Kaling even credited Diwali for making her cool and helping her make new mom friends. “‘I’m not like a regular mom. I’m a cool mom.’ Cheesing in our @pixsterphotobooth and then hanging with my favorite Diwali babes @drdeepikachopra and @dulariamin! It’s amazing how my kids school has opened up my friendships with Indian women! We’re basically the Big Little Lies moms now except instead of hiding murders we help throw Diwali parties! I love school events! I’m THAT mom now lololol. Happy Diwali to all the parents out there quickly googling Diwali before explaining it to your kids. I see you. 🪔👀,” she wrote on Instagram.

Morning talk show host Kelly Ripa also hopped onto Instagram to share her hot pink Diwali look alongside longtime husband Mark Consuelo. Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi danced up a storm while looking like a million bucks as she wished her followers a peaceful season. The cookbook author also shared a video of her yummy recipe for Lassi Pops.

Whether they celebrated at home, in school, or on the dance floor of a fancy party, it’s pretty cool to see all these moms and stars shine so bright on this Festival of Lights.

8 Ways To Dispose Of Pumpkins After Halloween

It simply wouldn’t be Halloween without jack-o’-lanterns and afternoon strolls around pumpkin patches with the fam. No matter how gross it feels to dig out those seedy pumpkin innards or how difficult it can be to carve the perfect ghoulish grin in its rind, a glowing jack-o’-lantern (or three) on the front porch or windowsill is worth all the effort. But what are you supposed to do with it once November hits? If you don’t know exactly how to dispose of pumpkins after Halloween, you’re definitely not alone.

More than one billion pounds of pumpkins get thrown away and left to rot in U.S. dumps each year, which contributes to the 35.3 million tons of annual food waste that ends up in landfills, according to data from the EPA. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy warns that, when left to decompose in a landfill, your seasonal Halloween pumpkins become known as municipal solid waste, which then turns into methane — a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change by producing more than 20 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide.

Turns out, though, you don't have to throw your jack-o’-lantern in the trash after Halloween. If you want to be a little more green, knowing how to dispose of pumpkins after Halloween will spark plenty of sustainable and creative ideas to recycle your gourd. When the candy is all gone and you go to toss the carved or uncarved pumpkins that you’ve been proudly displaying all October long, think twice before you simply throw them in the garbage can. Instead, here’s how you can save your pumpkin from the dump.

What do you do with old pumpkins?

If the pumpkin you want to get rid of is uncarved, you have plenty of options to use the inside of it in delicious pumpkin recipes or DIY projects. If you have carved pumpkins, fret not — there are options here for you, too.

If your pumpkin is rotting, opt for just throwing it in your compost bin. Any sign of mold indicates that your pumpkin should be composted rather than repurposed, and the mold may be harmful to animals or plants if left outside in a garden. Additionally, if you painted your pumpkin, don’t give it to animals or use it in any recipes, as paint can be toxic if ingested. And for composting, make sure to remove any candles, decorations, and painted areas on the gourd first.

Can you throw pumpkins in the woods?

Since pumpkins are biodegradable and you can dispose of them in your own backyard, you may think tossing your aging pumpkin into the woods is a similarly good idea. However, that largely isn’t the case. In fact, many wildlife and plant experts advise citizens against just throwing their old Halloween and Thanksgiving pumpkins in the woods.

For one, pumpkins are known to smother native plants and create their own microhabitats that might harm anything else growing there, according to horticulture, environment, and energy experts at University of Illinois Extension. Especially if the pumpkin is rotting or was exposed to toxins from paint or candles, you don’t want to leave it out for wildlife to munch on, as it can spread disease and harm the animals. Overall, there isn’t much harm in placing one or two gourds in your yard for wildlife to snack on or incorporating pumpkins into your own garden’s soil, but contributing to a mass disposal of pumpkins into the wild can potentially mess up the local biosystem — and no one wants that. It’s best to play it safe and not just throw all of your Halloween pumpkins away in the woods.

If your pumpkin is in good condition for use outside of composting, here’s a list ideas for how to recycle or reuse your pumpkin — rather than throw it away — after Halloween.

Roast the seeds

When you’re carving out and prepping your pumpkin for its jack-o’-lantern makeover, make sure to save the seeds so you can make roasted pumpkin seeds for a yummy, crunchy snack this fall season. Once you remove the pulp and entangle the raw seeds from the pumpkin with a spoon, give the seeds a rinse in a colander to remove any excess stringy bits, and make sure to dry them completely with a towel to ensure extra crispiness. Then season the seeds with olive oil, salt, pepper and whatever spices you’re feeling before you spread them evenly on a baking sheet and pop them in the oven.

Compost your pumpkin

One of the easiest solutions to figuring out how to dispose of pumpkins after Halloween is finding a local community-based collection organization that will simply take them off your hands. Pumpkins are full of nutrients and water that, when decomposed, are great for soil, and they can be used in parks, gardens, and farms in the form of natural fertilizer. However, if you have a garden, you can also just do this yourself.

Tossing leftover pumpkins into your garden soil is a great way to fertilize your own backyard garden or greenhouse, as well as a fun means to plant some pumpkin seeds that will hopefully grow more future gourds. If you don’t want any rogue pumpkins growing next year, though, make sure your pumpkin is free of seeds before adding it to the garden.

Additionally, if you already have a compost bin, you can just throw the pumpkin in it. And if you don’t have one, maybe your leftover pumpkins can be the catalyst for you to set one up. Make one yourself or use resources such as CompostNow to get started with your own at-home composting bin.

Puree it

Pumpkin spice, pumpkin pie, and pumpkin bread all have the same origin: pumpkin puree. It’s used in almost every festive pumpkin dish you can make, and while you can buy canned versions, recycling your jack-o’-lantern into a puree is a wonderful way to spice up your Thanksgiving spread and impress everyone at the party.

Plus, did you know pumpkins contain vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc, and plenty of antioxidants? You can also take the homemade pumpkin puree and make simple pumpkin face masks to help nourish your skin as the weather gets colder.

Make veggie stock

Another way to repurpose pumpkin trim and guts is to use them to make pure pumpkin stock or vegetable broth. If you’re new to homemade veggie stock, it’s a great, sustainable way to use up vegetable scraps and save a few bucks you’d normally spend on the ingredient at the supermarket.

Simply throw all the leftover pumpkin trimmings and other veggie scraps — such as onion, garlic, carrots, zucchini, corn, mushrooms, and more — into a pot, cover them with water, and let simmer for at least half an hour. Then strain out the solids from the liquid and let it cool. Now you have a hearty veggie broth to use in so many savory dishes, be it soup, risotto, or anything in between.

Cook with the pumpkins

Yes, you can cook with Halloween pumpkins. As with any gourd or squash, you’ll want to scoop out the seeds first. And this isn’t a good way to dispose of pumpkins that have been carved — save this one for your uncarved pumpkins.

Craft a bird feeder

If your pumpkin is mold-free, you can fill it up with bird seed and set it out in your yard to make a pumpkin feeder for all the local birds and nighttime critters. Wildlife will flock to the pumpkin for the seeds, but they’ll also eat the gourd itself. In no time, your pumpkin will be gone, and the animals will have full bellies heading into winter.

Make pumpkin chips

If your pumpkin's skin is still nice and orange, try making some pumpkin chips. Peel the skin, sprinkle with some spices, and let dry out in a dehydrator or throw in the oven. You can serve the chips at your next get together, or munch on them while you watch your favorite autumn shows and movies this season.

Bury your pumpkin

If you want to enrich your soil, but you don’t necessarily want to stare at an entire rotting squash for weeks, you can always cut it up into smaller pieces and bury your pumpkin in shallow holes in your garden. The pumpkin will break down and enrich the soil with nutrients. You can try this with larger indoor plants, too, but the smell might not be the most pleasant as the material breaks down.

As long as you’re checking for rot and mold on your pumpkin first, it’s totally fine to give the gourd a second life. Minimize waste and have a little fun in the process. Who said a pumpkin’s only role is to sit on the porch?

Disney's New 'Zootopia+' TV Series Has A November 2022 Release Date

If there’s a kid who didn’t love Zootopia, it would come as a big surprise. Actually it would be a big surprise if there was an adult who didn’t love the Oscar-winning animated feature from 2016. There’s just something about the idea of Zootopia, a city where every animal has a role to play in society no matter their size, that was simply enticing. And now Zootopia fans are going to get the ultimate deep dive into that very city with a new series coming to Disney+. Here’s everything you need to know.

Zootopia+ will give us a deeper look at the residents of the famous city.

Remember when Judy Hopp (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) rode the train through Zootopia and we all got glimpses of the different neighborhoods? The camels running through the desert, the snowy mountain range, the underwater world, forests, and finally the big city? Well Zootopia+, the new series based on the original film, is all about giving fans a better look at all of those neighborhoods. A first look at images from the new series shared at Disney’s D23 Expo in June featured some familiar faces that will be returning; Priscilla (Kristen Bell), DMV sloth Flash (Raymond S. Peri) and Fru Fru the arctic shrew (Leah Latham.) Judy Hopp is back as are her parents, and a young Mr. Big is also pictured, which could point to some flashback segments.

The Disney+ series’ episode list reads like it belongs on Bravo.

While no trailer has been dropped by Disney+ at this point, a panel did share the six episode titles for Zootopia+ that give a pretty clear vision of what the new series might look like. And one episode in particular sounds like it has been pulled right from the Bravo network.

  • “The Real Rodents of Rodentia”
  • “Duke the Musical”
  • “Hopp on Board”
  • “The Godfather of the Bride”
  • “So You Think You Can Prance”
  • “Dinner Rush”

When does Zootopia+ premiere?

Zootopia+ will premiere on Nov. 9 on Disney+. The streaming giant has not shared details about how many episodes will be available for the first season, but judging from the episode list alone it seems like a safe bet that six episodes will be dropping.

Zootopia+ will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+. So if you and your kids have always wondered about the secondary characters in Zootopia, you’re going to want to set some time aside to watch Zootopia+ next month.
