Does Your Clitoris Change After Pregnancy? Experts Explain

— FatCamera/E+/Getty Images

It’s no secret that your body will change when you have a child. Things feel different, your skin breaks out, stretch marks appear, and even your hair can change. But it’s impossible to talk about bodily changes without mentioning what happens to your genitals. Like does your clitoris change after pregnancy? It was on the frontlines for your birth, especially if you delivered vaginally. (And honestly, it probably changed throughout pregnancy, too.)

If you have a vaginal birth, you can expect some changes to occur, but the severity of these changes and how long your recovery takes will depend on a number of factors. “After the majority of first births, the vaginal tissue, including the clitoris, is swollen and bruised for a period of two to six weeks,” birth educator and doula Sara Lyon says. “As the tissue recovers, there can be longer-lasting changes like loss of sensation, stinging, or tenderness — particularly if there has been tearing — but those symptoms often subside with the cessation of breastfeeding and as the postpartum hormones dissipate.”

Can the clitoris actually tear during childbirth?

Reading the word “tearing” in relation to your clitoris likely sparks a bit of fear, so let’s address that first and foremost. While it can happen, it’s actually pretty rare, according to Lyon.

“The most important things to remember about childbirth are one, there are no guarantees, and two, statistically speaking, really crazy things probably won’t happen to you,” Lyon says. “With that in mind, yes, it is possible for a woman to injure or tear her clitoris or periclitoral tissue — the hood. It is, by far, the most surprising and terrifying thing that most of us can hear about our bodies, but it isn’t a common occurrence.”

— Kemal Yildirim/E+/Getty Images

The positioning of your baby and how quickly they are delivered will factor into whether or not tearing happens — to your clitoris, perineum, or other tissue that is stressed during delivery. Unfortunately, healing from a clitoral tear takes time, and can be quite painful. Some tears will require stitches, which can be “painful due to the extraordinary number of nerve endings there,” says Dr. Anita Sadaty, M.D., who specializes in integrative gynecology and functional medicine. She also notes, however, that “because it is so vascular and has good blood flow,” this can contribute positively to the healing process.

The severity of a tear will determine how long healing takes and how much medical treatment or intervention is required to help you recover. But just because you experienced clitoral tearing in one birth does not mean you’re doomed to have it happen with every birth. “It’s important to note that a clitoral tear with your first birth doesn’t condemn you to clitoral tears henceforth,” Lyon says. “Most women will not tear anteriorly in following births and might not tear at all.”

Changes to the clitoris can happen even when tearing does not.

Even without an injury like tearing, your clitoris may be swollen and tender to the touch in the immediate postpartum period. Any of the thousands of nerves in the clitoris can experience damage during childbirth, which can cause swelling, tenderness, pain, itching, burning, and possible sexual dysfunction, be it temporary or otherwise.

“There are many potential changes that can occur and stick around, like nerve involvement or entrapment, scarring, persistent swelling, and more,” says Lisa Sottung, PT, a physical therapist with WiseBody PT. “In those cases, it is imperative to get help from a pelvic floor or women’s health physical therapist to resolve the symptoms.”

When will your clitoris get back to normal?

Even if you don’t experience tearing, don’t expect your clitoris to heal overnight. Those tiny tears that might happen from the abrasive aspects of childbirth, along with the influx of hormones that change your entire body, are also responsible for the changes in your clitoris postpartum. So, your clitoris may look different after giving birth, but these experts agree it will likely return to your body’s baseline with time (sometimes, up to one year).

But it’s typically not that long — women who experience clitoral discomfort or pain in the postpartum period generally report that the pain continues about as long as they bleed postpartum, or around six weeks. Other women, like those with damage to the dorsal nerve of the clitoris or those women who had a particularly complex birth, might experience more pain, swelling, and dysfunction than women with simpler deliveries.

“The acute postpartum recovery period needs to be respected and protected for fast, thorough healing of the vaginal tissue and, frankly, your reproductive organs more broadly. You just went through the workout of your life and you will need to treat your body as though you are a recovering athlete,” Lyon says. She recommends resting horizontally, icing the area, and seeking professional help from a physical therapist and possibly a mental health professional to help cope with your recovery.

As with everything related to childbirth, if you have any concerns, or if something just doesn’t look or feel right to you, it’s worth a discussion with your physician.

Caleb Williams' Nails Are A Sweet Tribute To His Mom

— Todd Rosenberg/Getty Images Sport/Getty Images

The NFL Draft is an exciting time for football fans. Like the various franchises hoping to build the best possible team, fans have been watching some of these college players for years. While it was no surprise that the Chicago Bears chose University of Southern California quarterback and 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams as the first overall pick of 2024, it was still a proud moment, and he proudly sported his signature painted nails (coordinated to his girlfriend’s dress). But why does Caleb Williams paint his nails? It ultimately comes down to his mom, Dayne Price.

In a 2022 interview with USC Athletics posted to TikTok, Williams explained where his inspiration came from. “It started ... my last year of high school. My mom does nails, to start it off there, and she’s done it for my whole life, so it’s always been around me and nobody else does it. I like to do new things, I don’t really care what people have to say about it.”

He explained that it changes every week and joked that he has to take care of his hands because they’re “where all the gold comes from.”

Williams has been vocal about how close he is with his mother, describing her in the past as the most important person in his life. After a pivotal loss to the Washington Huskies last year, Williams hopped into the stands and clung to his mom, visibly sobbing despite the fact that Price held a sign in front of his face to shield it from the crowds and cameras. “I was sitting over there, beat up, I was defeated,” he told TalkSport. “Right there, at that moment, I was good. I didn’t start doing all that until I got up there. So, I was walking up to her; I was good, I was good. ... Then I hopped up, and I touched my mom, and I just lost it. Because in my mind, I was going through everything. I was like 'this is it, coming near the end for me'. I can’t get to the Pac-12 Championship. I can’t go to the national playoffs, national championship."

Honestly, we’ve all been there or near enough at some point.

But it wasn’t the end, obviously. Williams is going to be playing for the Chicago Bears and while his mom wasn’t with him at the draft, she did send him a sweet, encouraging message that was shared to Instagram.

“I teared up a little bit as I prepared to say this message to you. You must have got that crying from me,” she joked. “But continue to be your authentic self.”

“As I’ve always said, I’ve learned so much from you,” she continued. “Thank you for always pushing me forward to be a better me on many occasions.”

Needless to say, Williams watched the message with tears in his eyes. And responded to the video praising his mom’s support, even as she worked two jobs. “She’s a wonderful lady,” he said. “My best friend.”

And #BoyMoms throughout America all swooned in unison...

Gwyneth Paltrow Opens Up About Having "Nervous Breakdown" Over Moses

— Arnold Jerocki/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Gwyneth Paltrow is preparing herself for one of the most transformative elements of motherhood: adjusting to a household without children. As her 18-year-old son Moses prepares to head off to college, the mom of two is having a “nervous breakdown” about this new chapter in her life.

The Goop mogul recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the impending departure of son Moses — whom she shares with ex-husband Chris Martin along with 20-year-old daughter Apple —as he prepares to leave for Brown University in the fall. “It’s kind of giving me a nervous breakdown, if I’m honest,” Paltrow admitted during a Q&A session. “I started being like, ‘Oh my God, and I need to quit my job and I need to sell my house and I need to move.’ It’s sort of putting things into turmoil.”

The mom of two went on to share that her whole identity is wrapped up in being a mother, “so I’ve oriented my whole life around them and their schedules and when school starts. You start to let go in increments when they’re driving themselves around or doing certain things. It is a slower process.”

As Moses prepares to leave, this will mean that Paltrow, who is married to Brad Falchuk and stepmom to his two children, 19-year-old Isabella and 17-year-old Brody, needs to brace herself for a whole new lifestyle. Fortunately for her, she has “a close group of mom friends and we all raised our kids alongside one another. So we’re kind of in it together.”

Paltrow was wise to start bracing herself for this shift in her life last year, when she spoke to E! News about trying to connect with herself and reframe the way she looks at aging as the years go by. “I've always been the person who has tried to get closer and closer to myself and be really true to myself,” the beauty mogul explained, “so I'm trying to explore what that means as I age.”

Becoming an empty nester is a really difficult transition for all moms, and one so few of us prepare ourselves for. Gwyneth Paltrow’s honesty about the identity crisis she faces as her children move away is so important for other moms to see. Because it’s a difficult time for all moms, even super famous ones.

Prince William Told Knock Knock Jokes At School & Won Everyone Over

— OLI SCARFF/AFP/Getty Images

If there’s one thing we know about Prince William, it’s that he loves a dad joke. As a father of three himself, he presumably gets ample opportunity to shell them out with George, Charlotte, and Louis. But why limit all that corny humor to the walls of his castle? Recently, the future King of England stopped by a school for a surprise visit after he was invited by one of the students on Thursday, where he hung out and told knock knock jokes.

Prince William spent time at St. Michael’s Church of England High School in Birmingham on Thursday after he was invited by a 12-year-old student named Freddie last October. Freddie wanted Prince William to come see the school’s Matrix Project, which focused on de-stigmatizing male mental health support, an issue the Prince of Wales has long championed himself. While Prince William and Kate Middleton were unable to visit in October, Prince William visited on his own on Thursday to meet Freddie and other students. “Well done you, I’m here now. Your letter worked. I’m sorry I couldn’t come to you in October,” Prince William said upon meeting Freddie.

He even joined the young student on his podcast where he was able to tell a classic dad joke, which he explained was a particular favorite of his 8-year-old daughter Princess Charlotte. “It’s one she keeps telling me,” he explained in a video of his podcast interview. It was a knock knock joke about the interrupting cow. And everyone loved it.

Prince William, who is also dad to 10-year-old Prince George and 6-year-old Prince Louis, has long been a fan of the dad joke. Just ask him what his favorite emoji is and he’ll tell you it’s an “aubergine,” also known as the eggplant emoji. He’s been known to really ham it up during his royal visits, like when he was at a restaurant and jumped on the phone to start taking lunch reservations, or when he played along when a little kid asked him where Prince William was and pretended to be someone else.

His sense of humor will come in handy at home these days, with both his father, King Charles III and Kate Middleton undergoing cancer treatment, both he and his young are children probably feeling the weight of this in their home. A good knock knock joke would not go amiss every now and then.

Pregnant Ashley Tisdale Says Her Toddler Keeps Getting Her Sick & It's "Horrible"

— Bravo/NBCUniversal/Getty Images

Ashley Tisdale is pregnant with her second child and learning fast that this is an entirely different ball game. Every pregnancy is different, of course we know that. But when you are pregnant for the second time and your first child is still a toddler, it’s a special kind of different. As Ashley Tisdale recently discovered when her 3-year-old continues to get her sick while she is pregnant, and it’s “horrible.”

Tisdale announced that she and husband Christopher French are expecting their second baby at the end of March, which will make 3-year-old daughter Juniper a big sister in the coming months. While the couple did not share the baby’s due date or sex, the High School Musical star did say that they “can’t wait” to meet their second baby, while her husband noted, “We can do this lol.”

They are definitely doing this, but it’s not always easy. Tisdale took to her Instagram Story on Tuesday to share an update with her followers. “Let me tell you something, being sick while pregnant is no fun. Like literally, argh, it's horrible,” Tisdale said in the video. “It’s horrible. This pregnancy you guys, I’ve been sick so many times because my 3-year-old brings so much sh*t home.”

“Stomach flus, colds, all of it. And it is so rough, it’s so rough,” she went on to add. “So if there’s any pregnant moms out there who are trying to just get by, I feel you.”

The Suite Life of Zack and Cody star shared the video from her bed, where she is hopefully getting a bit of respite from the onslaught of toddler colds and stomach flus that Jupiter is merrily bringing into her home on a regular basis. In fact, once she is feeling a bit better perhaps Tisdale might want to consider getting away on another moms’ weekend with Hilary Duff and Meghan Trainor before she welcomes her second baby. The three moms went away together back in 2022, although it might be more difficult for Duff now as she is due to welcome her fourth baby any day. As for Trainor, she has two boys at home so she might be happy for the break.

Although her kids are probably spreading germs too. There’s just no getting away from it when toddlers are in the mix.

'Bluey's Best Outdoor Games To Play With Your Kids

— Disney+

We’ve all established at this point that we love Bluey’s house (thank goodness the Heelers decided to remain in it!) but let us not forget the fabulous outdoor space and all the possibilities it holds. The show is all about play in general, but there’s certainly an emphasis put on outside games in some cases, so we’ve gathered our favorite outdoor games from Bluey that you might want to try with your own kiddos.

There’s certainly no dearth of episodes to draw on for a list like this. Sure, most of the games she and her sister Bingo play take place in their house, but there’s plenty of outdoor spaces the Heelers love, from the creek to the playground, the beach to the sweeping lawn of Glasshouse Primary School, and lots of other beautiful natural settings. While many of these games could just as easily be played inside as outside, we specifically wanted to go for games that are more fun when played outside, or have particular “outside-y” elements that can’t really be replicated indoors.

From imaginative play to running around with a purpose, there’s all kinds of fun ways to play outdoors, whether you’re a cartoon dog or a human child with energy to burn...

“Shadowlands” | Season 1, Episode 5

— Disney+

How To Play: Go outside in a shady, but not completely overcast area. See if you and your kiddos can keep in the shady part of your yard/park/etc. as you run around. In places where you see a sunny spot in between shadows, jump or create a larger shadow in order to pass. The game ends when you’re tired of it, but don’t shy away from a challenge!

In this early episode, Bluey, Snickers, and Coco are having a playdate. While their mums chat on a picnic blanket, the kids play “shadowlands,” where they have to remain in the various shadows of the playground, jumping over patches of sunlight to remain “safe.” In places where the gap between shadows becomes too large, the kids have to get creative in creating larger shadows to make the passage possible.

Coco, who is a bit more averse to a challenge, keeps trying to bend the rules to make the game easier, much to Bluey’s annoyance. Finally, everyone learns that sometimes the rules are what make a game fun.

“Dance Mode” | Season 2, Episode 3

— Disney+

How To Play: While out and about — maybe at the grocery store, at the park, running errands, or just having a family day out of the house — allow your kid a set number of “Dance Mode” activations. When they touch you and say “Dance Mode!” you have to dance for 30 seconds, no matter where you are or what you’re doing, safety allowing, of course.

This fan favorite episode, Bingo is given the opportunity to activate “Dance Mode” on her family. A touch of their tails and they have to dance, no matter where they are or what they’re doing. Could you technically play this game inside? Sure. But the stakes aren’t the same when you aren’t out in public, dancing among strangers.

OK, I know what you’re thinking: there’s no way you would play this game with your kids. Even Chilli and Bandit aren’t too keen on this one. But hear me out: this is a great way to really engage with your kids and also help you get over self-consciousness and inhibitions. (Kevin Jonas highly recommends it!) Go ahead and give it a go!

“Rug Island” | Season 2, Episode 10

— Disney+

How To Play: You, an adult, are “shipwrecked” on an island (any outdoor space). The children you’re playing with are the island’s inhabitants who teach you how to live there. The sky’s the limit with this one but you will have to stretch those imaginary muscles.

This beautiful episode is everything that’s good about Bluey. Bandit, pressed for time, can’t play with the girls on his way to work. Of course, this being Bluey, he finds the time and joins them in a game of “Rug Island,” where everything from fish to houses to fruit is made out of colorful felt pens. There, the girls teach him their ways — how to fish, make a shelter, harvest bananas, cook, and more. Most importantly, they teach him how to find joy in simplicity. But Rug Island isn’t for adults — it’s basically a metaphor for childhood — and while adults are welcome to visit, they cannot stay, and Bandit sails back to the land of adults. (This also gives you a great out when you’re done playing.)

“Obstacle Course” | Season 3, Episode 2

— Disney+

How To Play: Set up a simple obstacle course in your outdoor space for you and your kiddo. Include things to run around, under, over, climb, jump, and more. Get creative with it!

Everyone has things they’re naturally good at and things they need to practice. In this episode, Bluey finds she frequently loses to her dad in certain games, including an obstacle course. Her little legs just can’t keep up. But the difference between people who are really good at something and people who really aren’t is rarely just a matter of natural talent: it’s practice. Chilli trains Bluey to improve her time and when she eventually re-challenges her dad, she is victorious... at least she would have been if Bandit hadn’t cheated rather than admit his 7-year-old beat him.

“Dirt” | Season 3, Episode 36

— Disney+

How To Play: Just find some dirt and play in it. Some games aren’t complicated.

When Bluey and Bingo have a massive mountain of dirt in the front yard, the sisters waste no time diving in, sliding down, and just generally having a great time getting dirty. But Judo, a chow chow known for her beautiful coat, is less inclined to get dirty. Who can blame her: it takes so much time to wash, brush, and style her fur so she doesn’t want to do it any more than she already does. But when her mom, the formidable Wendy, sees that Judo’s sense of identity based on her appearance is keeping her from having fun and being a kid, Wendy gives herself a super-short haircut to show her that everyone is more than their appearance. Soon, Judo is also sporting a short do and is frolicking in the dirt with her friends.
