Malaysia is getting a taste of Japan this July as Japan Expo Malaysia 2026 (JEMY 2026) returns for its seventh edition, bringing together Japanese Culture, entertainment, food, tourism, and innovation under one roof at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
Taking place from 24 to 26 July 2026, the three day celebration is expected to welcome 50,000 visitors from Malaysia and across the region, cementing its position as one of Southeast Asia’s largest Japanese lifestyle and cultural festivals. As one of the official events under Visit Malaysia Year 2026, this year’s edition will also offer free admission, making Japanese experiences more accessible to fans, travellers, and curious visitors alike.
From anime and cosplay to authentic Japanese cuisine, travel experiences, lifestyle products and technology showcases, JEMY 2026 will feature more than 50 exhibitors offering visitors a closer look at the many sides of Japan.
AKB48 Returns To Malaysia For An Exclusive Concert
The biggest highlight for J-Pop fans will undoubtedly be the return of Japanese idol powerhouse AKB48, who will headline Japan Expo Malaysia 2026, with an exclusive concert on 25th July.
Making their first Malaysian appearance in nearly two years following their successful 2024 Kuala Lumpur concert, AKB48 is set to bring their signature high energy performances back to local fans. The group will also perform their upcoming single「好きish」(Sukisshu) Live for the first time ahead of its official release in Japan on 19 August 2026.
Since debuting in 2005, AKB48 has become one of Japan’s most influential entertainment exports, redefining the modern idol industry with their “idols you can meet” concept. Known for fan-favourite hits including Heavy Rotation, Aitakatta, Flying Get and Koisuru Fortune Cookie, the group has built a global following and inspired sister groups across Asia, including Malaysia’s very own KLP48.
The exclusive AKB48 concert will be one of only two ticketed performances throughout the expo, with tickets starting from RM180 via Etix Malaysia.
A Weekend Filled with Japanese Music And Performances
Beyond AKB48, JEMY 2026 will feature an exciting entertainment line upof more than 20 Japanese and Malaysian artists, celebrating everything from traditional performances to contemporary J-pop.
Japanese alternative band Atarayo will also take the stage on 24th July. Audiences can look forward to performances from J-pop acts including Banzai Japan, Kotomen, Nakano Himawari, Rina Hime and KLP48.
The expo will officially open with a special performance celebrating the longstanding friendship between Malaysia and Japan, featuring the award winning Malaysian singer-songwriter MimiFly, alongside renowned Japanese performer Naomichi Hanazono, whose modern interpretation of traditional Japanese performing arts has earned him a growing following among younger audiences.
Visitors will also be treated to the vibrant Awa Odori dance performance from Tokushima Prefecture, showcasing one of Japan’s most beloved traditional art forms.
Celebrate Japanese Culture Through Food, Travel And Creativity
While music takes centre stage, JEMY 2026 offers plenty for visitors looking to experience Japan beyond entertainment.
The expo will feature opportunities to explore Japanese travel destinations, education opportunities, cultural showcases, and lifestyle brands, while also creating a platform for Japanese and Malaysian businesses to connect and expand their presence.
For anime and pop culture lovers, the highly anticipated Cosplay Competition returns with a RM10 000 prize pool, inviting Malaysian cosplayers to showcase their creativity through characters from anime, manga, video games, and other Japanese inspired media.
The event will also recognise individuals and organisations that have contributed to strengthening the Japan-Malaysia relationship through the Japan Expo Malaysia Awards 2026, honouring nine outstanding figures across various industries.
