Village People Frontman Victor Willis Passed Away At Age 74 Of A “Short But Aggressive Illness”

The music industry mourns the death of an icon. Victor Willis, the frontman of the American disco group Village People, has passed away. He was 74 years old.

The Village People’s social media accounts relayed the devastating news, writing, “We are profoundly sad to announce the death of VICTOR WILLIS, lead singer of Village People.” The post continues, explaining that Victor passed away on 30th June 2026 (Tuesday) as a result of a short but aggressive illness.

Victor’s wife, Karen Huff-Willis, also shared a similar statement on the late singer’s official social media pages. Both Village People and Victor’s family asked for privacy and understanding during this difficult time. It’s worth noting that Victor was still actively performing up until his death and had recently released “Disco Star” with his group.

Victor is best known for his role as co-founder of 1970s disco group Village People. The Texas-born musician performed as the group’s lead singer and co-wrote their biggest hits, including “YMCA”, “Go West” and “Macho Man”. When performing with the group, Victor was often in costume as a policeman or a naval officer.

In 1980, the late singer left Village People and spent years fighting a copyright battle over the songs he’d written for the band. However, he rejoined Village People in 2017 and also performed with the group at Donald Trump’s pre-inauguration rally in January 2025. The President of the United States was among the many who paid tribute to Victor after his death.

On social media, fans mourned the disco icon and the songs he wrote for Village People, which were widely considered gay anthems despite Victor’s repeated refutation of the claims. Many also extended their condolences to Victor’s family and the rest of Village People on their loss, adding that Victor’s passing will have a significant impact on the music industry.

We also extend our condolences to Victor’s loved ones and groupmates on their loss. May they find strength during this difficult time and may the singer-songwriter rest in peace.
