Mastery From The Inside Out: Piaget Presents The New Piaget Polo Minute Repeater

Piaget have released the Piaget Polo Minute Repeater, which does what only Piaget can, elegantly exposing the inner workings of the caliber 1290P through a partially openworked dial that puts the technical mastery and artisanal craft of its La Côte-aux-Fées Manufacture on full display.

Since Georges-Édouard Piaget founded the Maison in 1874 in the depths of the Swiss Jura mountains with the founding principle to “always do better than necessary”, Piaget has pursued ultra-thin watchmaking as both a technical discipline and an artistic calling. This quest has produced some of the thinnest movements ever made and established Piaget as one of the rare Maisons equally fluent in the languages of Haute Horlogerie and Haute Joaillerie.

SOURCE: PIAGET

The Piaget Polo Minute Repeater is the latest expression of that dual ambition. The release builds on the Maison’s modern legacy of ultra-thin chiming watches. In 2013, Piaget introduced the world’s thinnest minute repeater in the Piaget Polo Emperador case, marking a new milestone in the Maison’s long-standing mastery. The Piaget Polo Minute Repeater carries that achievement further, integrating the complication into the Piaget Polo collection—Piaget’s modern sports watch—while maintaining the wearability and elegance the line is known for.

Mastery From The Inside Out

The caliber 1290P is entirely conceived, developed, finished, and assembled at Piaget’s Manufacture in La Côte-aux-Fées, where Georges-Édouard Piaget founded the Maison in 1874. Its 430 components require many weeks of handfinishing and assembly work. The bridges are hand-beveled, the main plate features a subtle guilloché, and the minute-repeater hammers are hand-polished to a mirror finish. The heartbeat of the watch relies on a platinum micro-rotor, a choice dictated by both the laws of physics and haute horology for its superior winding efficiency, dressed in a rich blue PVD coating to match the vibrant dial.

The dial itself is a study in Piaget’s dual mastery of High Watchmaking and High Jewellery. It is executed in gold, its surface in hand guilloché—a technique as demanding as any in the Manufacture. The result is a soleillé (sunray) finish that radiates across its surface, while a delicate opaline outer track offers contrast and depth. A meticulously crafted gold fillet winds across the dial, its profile transitioning from straight to domed, revealing portions of the repeater mechanism beneath. At four o’clock, a smoked blue sapphire ring — bearing the “La Côte-aux-Fées” inscription — sits atop the inertia wheel, the dedicated regulator of the minute repeater fully visible. Over 150 hours went into the dial’s development alone, with 50 additional hours dedicated to the hand finishing of each individual piece.

SOURCE: PIAGET

The Sound Of Piaget

While the dial and movement exist in perfect visual harmony, a minute repeater is ultimately defined by one thing: its voice. The caliber 1290P delivers 64 decibels of intensity, three harmonic partials, and a damping factor of 2,600 — the result of extensive parallel research into both movement mechanics and case resonance. Hours are struck at G sharp; minutes at A sharp, both in the fifth octave. The chiming slide sits at nine o’clock and activates downward, a deliberate engineering solution born from the complete reimagining of the movement architecture.

All of this is housed in an 18-karat white gold case measuring 48mm with a case thickness of just 9.30mm, maintaining the fluid shape-in-shape design of the Piaget Polo. The Piaget Polo Minute Repeater is water resistant to 3 ATM, unusually resilient for a chiming watch that wears with the ease and confidence demanded of a sport-chic watch. It is delivered on a blue textured embossed calfskin strap with a folding clasp and an additional leather bracelet.

Only five numbered pieces of the Piaget Polo Minute Repeater will be crafted this year. Not a limited edition by design, but as a consequence of the work required for each piece. Following the perpetual calendar and flying tourbillon, it is the latest in a series of grand complications Piaget has brought to the Piaget Polo, each making its own statement about what the Maison can achieve when technical ambition meets artisanal excellence, and proof that in the hands of Piaget, a sports watch can also be a work of art.

SOURCE: PIAGET

Haute Joaillerie Meets Haute Horlogerie

Alongside the Piaget Polo Minute Repeater, Piaget is also introducing anotherHigh Jewellery version which puts on full display the Maison’s dual expertise in watchmaking and jewellery. The bezel is set with baguette-cut blue sapphires;the case with a combination of baguette-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds. The dial is fully openworked, placing all 70-plus hours of handcraft on unobstructed display. It is the rarest expression of what Piaget does best: Haute Jewellery and Haute Horlogerie, in perfect acoustic harmony.

Skechers Unveils Expanded Sunway Pyramid Superstore As SEVENTEEN DK, Seungkwan & Dino Make Their First Official Regional Ambassador Appearance

Skechers, The Comfort Technology Company™ and global leader in lifestyle and performance footwear, marked a new chapter last Friday (28th August 2026), in its continued growth across Malaysia with the opening of its newly relocated and expanded Superstore at Sunway Pyramid (LG1.129).

Bringing together a series of brand milestones under one roof, the celebration marked the first official public appearance since their appointment as Skechers Regional Brand Ambassadors DK (도겸), SEUNGKWAN (승관), and DINO (디노) of SEVENTEEN (세븐틴), alongside a special big-screen showcase of the brand’s latest campaign video featuring the trio.

SOURCE: SKECHERS MALAYSIA

Located within Sunway Pyramid, the newly relocated store spans approximately 8,650 square feet, nearly six times the size of its previous 1,453 square-foot location within the mall. The newly expanded Superstore is the first of its kind in Subang Jaya and offers consumers a broader selection of Skechers lifestyle and performance footwear, apparel and accessories in a more immersive shopping environment.

The event attracted an estimated of more than 8,000 attendees, comprising invited guests, fans and shoppers, as the celebration brought together the store opening and an immersive experience at the mall’s iconic Ice Rink. From a combined fashion and parkour performance featuring the Skechers Fall Winter 2026 Shoes and Apparel to interactive fan activities and entertainment, the event brought together fashion, performance and community in one of the brand’s largest consumer activations in Southeast Asia to date.

A New Chapter For Skechers At Sunway Pyramid

Following its soft opening on 7th August 2026, the newly relocated Sunway Pyramid Superstore represents Skechers’ continued investment in enhancing its retail presence across Malaysia.

Designed to meet growing consumer demand, the expanded space houses Skechers’ most comprehensive product offering in Subang Jaya to date. Alongside its full range of lifestyle footwear, apparel and accessories, the store features dedicated zones for Walking, Running, Pickleball, Trail, Kids and Performance Apparel, creating a more intuitive shopping journey while making it easier for consumers to explore products tailored to different lifestyles and activities.

The Superstore brings together the brand’s lifestyle and performance categories within a single retail destination. This further reinforces Skechers’ commitment to being a one-stop destination for consumers seeking footwear, apparel and accessories across a wide range of sports and everyday wear.

Complementing the expanded retail space are also new in-store experiences designed to make shopping more interactive and personalised. Customers can utilise Skechers’ SafeSize foot-scanning technology to receive personalised fit recommendations, while the DIY Customisation Corner allows shoppers to customise selected footwear and apparel with charms, shoelaces and heat-pressed graphics, offering a unique way to express their personal style.

Stepping Inside The New Space

To officially mark the opening, Skechers Regional Brand Ambassadors DK, SEUNGKWAN, and DINO joined Skechers’ senior leadership for the Opening Ceremony, which featured a photo opportunity with a giant Skechers AERO Burst shoe display. Inspired by the bold design of the AERO Burst performance running shoe — renowned for its responsive cushioning and smooth ride — the display anchored the moment as the trio celebrated the store’s official launch.

Following the ceremony, DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO toured the newly expanded Sunway Pyramid store, exploring the refreshed retail concept and engaging with fans and guests onsite.

The celebration brought together senior leadership from Skechers and Sunway:

  • Mr. Willie Tan – CEO, Skechers China, South Korea and Southeast Asia
  • Mr. Cedrick Tan – President, Skechers Hong Kong, South Korea and Southeast Asia
  • Ms. Camille Tan – General Manager, Skechers Hong Kong & Macau
  • Ms. Zann Lee – Managing Director, Skechers Southeast Asia
  • Ms. Stephanie Chang – Senior General Manager, Skechers Malaysia
  • Mr. HC Chan – Group Managing Director, Sunway
  • Mr. Jason Chin – Chief Executive Officer, Sunway Malls Selangor

“Malaysia continues to be an important growth market for Skechers, and we remain committed to investing in our retail footprint to meet evolving consumer expectations,” said Mr. Cedrick Tan, President of Skechers Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and South Korea. “The opening of our newly expanded Sunway Pyramid store is part of our broader growth strategy across the country, with 120 stores nationwide and plans to open more stores in the next few months. We’re equally excited to welcome DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO for their first official public appearance as Skechers Regional Brand Ambassadors, making this an unforgettable milestone for both the brand and our consumers.”

Bringing Skechers & Seventeen Fans Closer To The Brand

Following the announcement of DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO’s visit to Malaysia in July, Skechers launched the Skechers Sunway Pyramid Grand Opening – Meet & Greet with DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO of SEVENTEEN, giving fans the opportunity to earn exclusive passes to meet the trio in person. The campaign capped off at Sunway Pyramid, where 200 lucky winners enjoyed an exclusive Meet & Greet with the ambassadors, alongside an additional 250 consolation winners added due to the overwhelming response and participation from Skechers members and fans.

“At Skechers, we believe the strongest connections with our consumers are built through shared experiences. Today’s celebration was designed to bring fans closer to DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO while allowing them to experience our brand in new and memorable ways. From the premiere of our latest campaign video to the exclusive Meet & Greet and interactive activities throughout the day, every element was created to celebrate the community that continues to support Skechers across the region,” said Ms. Zann Lee, Managing Director of Skechers Southeast Asia.

Held at Sunway Pyramid’s iconic ice skating rink, the celebration opened with a parkour performance by local talents Flipatgym, Angelina Didier, and Angel Wong. Showcasing their agility, speed, and precision, they energised the crowd with daring stunts and dynamic movement.

Following the performance, the spotlight turned to the fashion show, where models presented the latest Skechers Fall Winter 2026 Apparel and Shoes Collection, alongside the exclusive and limited‑edition SKECHERS I SEVENTEEN’s DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO Apparel Collection. The showcase brought Skechers’ fusion of comfort, performance and style to life on the runway.

The event continued with an interactive stage segment, where the ambassadors took part in games and a live Q&A session, sharing their experiences as Skechers Regional Brand Ambassadors and the inspiration behind their first-ever co-created collection with Skechers.

Reflecting on the milestone, the trio each shared what the moment meant to them:

“We’ve been looking forward to meeting our Malaysian fans for a long time. Being here as Skechers Regional Brand Ambassadors and seeing all of your big smiles and hearing your loud cheers really touches my heart,” said DK.

“Skechers has been like family to us, and celebrating this moment here with everyone in Malaysia is something I’ll never forget,” added SEUNGKWAN.

“Marking our very first official appearance in such a beautiful Superstore at Sunway Pyramid with all of you makes me feel so grateful. Let’s make some amazing memories together today,” said DINO.

Fans also enjoyed a big-screen showcase of Skechers’ latest regional campaign video starring DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO. The video is part of the Skechers Hands-Free Slip-ins® campaign, showcasing several Skechers collections including the Skechers Court Classics Hotshot, Skechers Max Run and Skechers Max Cushioning® Glide-Step® Collections. During the segment, DINO also recreated some of his signature dance moves from the video, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

The event concluded with DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO joined by Skechers regional leaders for a special Token of Appreciation presentation. Each of the regional ambassadors, received a customised pair from the Skechers Court Classics Hotshot, specially designed in collaboration with Malaysian artist Jayklo, who incorporated elements from each member’s own apparel collection artwork into their pair. The celebration closed with a commemorative group photo with guests.

The new Skechers store at Sunway Pyramid is a testament to the brand’s dedication to providing its customers with an unparalleled shopping experience. Fans and shoppers alike are invited to visit the store at LG1.129, Level 1, Sunway Pyramid Mall, to explore the new space, try on the latest collections, and check out the SKECHERS I SEVENTEEN’s DK, SEUNGKWAN and DINO Apparel Collection while stocks last.

From Aestura To Carolina Herrera: The New Beauty Names At Sephora Malaysia

If there is one thing beauty lovers have come to expect from Sephora, it is the thrill of discovering new products. Following the recent House of Sephora, there is a fresh crop of beauty names waiting to be discovered.

The beauty retailer has been steadily expanding its roster with names that reflect where the industry is heading. We’re looking at Korean beauty with cult appeal, science-led skincare, advanced hair repair and fragrances designed to make an entrance. Take a look at the curated lineup:

The Olive Young x Sephora Malaysian Debut

SOURCE: SEPHORA MALAYSIA

One of the biggest developments is Sephora’s new partnership with Olive Young, Korea’s leading beauty and health retailer. The collaboration brings Olive Young’s expertise in identifying Korea’s most sought-after beauty trends directly into Sephora’s ecosystem.

For Malaysian beauty enthusiasts, the partnership opens the door to a fresh crop of K-beauty names making its way to Sephora. While K-beauty has long been a favourite among Malaysian shoppers, these newer additions are chosen for their popularity, performance and relevance in Korea.

Aestura

Already a familiar name among skincare devotees, Aestura brings a dermatological approach to everyday skin barrier care. Its Atobarrier365 range is particularly relevant for those dealing with dryness and a compromised skin barrier.

If there is one product that prioritises hydration and skin health, it is Aestura’s Atobarrier365 Cream. The cream has since become one of the best sellers in Korea thanks to its gentle yet effective skin barrier repair formulas.

Fully

Fully takes a rather different approach. The Korean brand gives familiar skincare ingredients a more playful treatment. The Green Tomato Clay Mask Cleanser combines the cleansing ritual with a clay-mask experience, while the Red Tomato Jam Mask Cleanser offers a more indulgent, jam-like texture. The Lemon Vita Bubble Serum, meanwhile, takes a brighter, more playful approach to serum application.

Shaishaishai

Then there is Shaishaishai, another playful addition to Sephora Malaysia’s Korean beauty line-up. The brand has already made its presence felt with products such as its Banana Conceal Eye Cream, adding a touch of colour and creativity to the K-beauty edit.

Beyond K-Beauty: More New Arrivals

SOURCE: SEPHORA MALAYSIA

The latest additions do not stop at Korean beauty. Sephora Malaysia is also welcoming new products across skincare, fragrance and haircare, offering something for almost every beauty mood.

Caudalie

French skincare favourite Caudalie joins the list with its Resveratrol-Lift Instant Firming Serum. For skincare lovers looking for a little more firmness and radiance, the serum will resonate with those who prefer targeted anti-ageing skincare without an overly complicated routine.

Olaplex

For hair that has seen one too many rounds of colouring, bleaching or heat styling, Olaplex No.3 Plus Complete Repair Treatment is a noteworthy addition. The treatment continues Olaplex’s focus on repairing and strengthening damaged hair, making it a practical addition to a routine that needs a little extra help. Because sometimes, your hair needs more than a good conditioner.

K18

K18 sits naturally within this new wave of discovery, particularly for anyone interested in the growing intersection between beauty technology and haircare. Rather than masking damage temporarily, the brand’s K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask addresses the condition of the hair itself.

Carolina Herrera

On the fragrance front, Carolina Herrera’s Good Girl Jasmine Absolute Eau de Parfum offers a sensual new interpretation of the iconic Good Girl universe. Centred around the elegance of jasmine, the fragrance retains the confident, glamorous spirit associated with the Good Girl name while taking its floral character in a richer direction.

Add These to Your Beauty List

SOURCE: SEPHORA MALAYSIA

What makes Sephora’s latest launches interesting is not simply the number of new products appearing on its shelves. It is the variety of beauty philosophies behind them.

There is the precision of Korean skincare, the growing obsession with skin-barrier health, the science of molecular hair repair and the enduring allure of fragrance. Together, they point to a beauty consumer who is becoming more curious, more informed and increasingly selective about what earns a place in their routine.

And then there are the names that have become synonymous with Sephora’s own world of discovery. Beauty lovers can also explore brands that are available exclusively through Sephora. KOSAS Cloud Set Loose Translucent Powder offers a lightweight way to set makeup without losing that fresh-skin finish. Rare Beauty steps further into fragrance with its new Eau de Parfum in Sweet Marshmallow and Fruity Pear, a softer and more sensorial side of the brand.

From Tatcha’s Japanese-inspired skincare to tarte’s playful complexion essentials, these brands add another layer to Sephora’s appeal. Then there is ONE/SIZE Colour Corrector Stain, bringing the brand’s bold approach to makeup into the colour-correction category.

For more information on these new products, check out https://www.sephora.my/.

Rentak MalaysiaKu 2026: A Slice Of Malaysian Life Is Served At GMBB This September 2026

Your grandmother taking you along to the pasar; The common question of “later eat what?”; The habits we picked up without quite remembering where we learned them, or simply the sights and sounds we have grown so accustomed to that we barely think about them.

This September, Kuala Lumpur’s creative community mall GMBB brings these familiar slices of Malaysian life into focus with Rentak MalaysiaKu 2026: Slice of Life, its annual Malaysia Day celebration featuring exhibitions, performances, workshops, films, poetry, city walks, pop-ups and other cultural experiences. Programmes will unfold throughout the weeks leading up to Malaysia Day, culminating in a packed weekend on 12th and 13th September 2026.

Curated by GMBB together with its creative community, this year’s Rentak MalaysiaKu looks beyond the milestones and symbols to celebrate the practices and experiences that are woven into Malaysian life – what we eat, the places we gather, the things we make, the traditions passed down to us and the little habits we share. Through these different slices of life, GMBB invites visitors to look again at the things we often take for granted, tracing where they come from and how they have become part of who we are.

“At GMBB, we have always believed that one of the most meaningful ways to understand Malaysia is through each other. Slice of Life celebrates the little things, habits and traditions that may feel familiar to some of us, but completely new to someone else. Through Rentak MalaysiaKu, we hope Malaysians can recognise a little of themselves, while experiencing how others live, create and carry their traditions. It is through these different slices of life that we begin to appreciate just how diverse, yet connected we really are,” said Lim Ying Hui, Senior General Manager of GMBB.

SOURCE: GMBB

The highlights of Rentak MalaysiaKu: Slice of Life 2026 include:

Snippets of Malaysian Life, As We Know It

Rentak MalaysiaKu offers different ways of seeing, hearing and experiencing the moments that colour Malaysian life. Footnote: Reading KL on Foot by Briana Leong takes visitors on four specially themed walks focusing on food, objects, signs and spaces around Kuala Lumpur, encouraging them to slow down and observe the everyday details that give our streets their character. The Mini Show Gallery captures the sights, sounds, flavours and experiences of life across Malaysia in miniature, while visitors can also embark on GMBB’s Slice of Life Limited Edition Sticker Rally, hunting for specially designed collectibles across its tenant stores from 12 to 16 September.

From Pasar to Pantry

The pasar means different things across generations, from memories of tagging along with our grandparents to where the ingredients for our favourite dishes begin. Rasa Pasar explores the market as a living archive of taste, while IMMERSIO 2026: PASAR, organised by new media art collective Filamen from 11th to 27th September, draws on the beautiful chaos of the market as a place of trade, exchange and constant movement, interpreted through art installations, projection mapping and digital works by artists across Southeast Asia.

Play Play Asia’s What Should We Have Tomorrow? turns meal planning for loved ones into a guided solo journaling game. Visitors can also turn their favourite pasar finds into art with Ingredients from the Market: Mengkuang Bag Painting, adding their own personal touch to the traditional woven bag.

Borneo, In Its Own Words

In a special collaboration with GMBB, HAUS KCH brings contemporary Bornean voices to Rentak MalaysiaKu through poetry, film and artisan pop-ups. Browse locally inspired perfumes, beaded accessories and more from five Bornean makers; experience six Slice of Life-inspired poetry works and a live performance by Wordsmiths of Kuching; and catch a selection of short films and documentaries by Bornean filmmakers.

Running from 2nd to 30th September, Inheritance: Borneo Women by Undercurrent adds another perspective by bringing together contemporary East Malaysian artists and collectives to explore Borneo’s matriarchal legacy through indigenous identity, memory and labour.

What We Inherit, What We Keep Alive

Traditions live on when they are practised, shared and reinterpreted. On 13th September, Luheiw Renaweij’s Sewang Ne’asik brings the instruments, singing and dancing of Perak’s Orang Asli Semai community to GMBB, while a Bharatanatyam performance and lecture demonstration offers audiences a glimpse at the artistry behind the Indian classical dance form. Fusion Wayang Kulit gives the centuries-old art of shadow puppetry a contemporary spin, while visitors can get hands-on with heritage through Mini Songket Weaving and designing their own Peranakan-inspired ceramic tiles.

A Malaysia Day Tradition at GMBB

For GMBB, Malaysia Day has always been an annual opportunity to explore the country through the people, stories and creative communities that shape it. Since Malaysiaku in 2019 which featured Yasmin 10 Years On, GMBB has continued to curate its own annual programmes, evolving through Let’s Sustain MalaysiaKu to Rasa Sayang and Rentak MalaysiaKu, each exploring Malaysia through a different lens.

SOURCE: GMBB

With programmes beginning from 22nd August and continuing throughout September 2026, visitors can experience Rentak MalaysiaKu 2026: Slice of Life at GMBB, with its main weekend taking place on 12th and 13th September 2026. “The Whisper Man” Review: Robert De Niro & Michael Keaton Elevate Netflix’s Familiar Thrill Of A Tune

There’s something about a good crime thriller that never really goes out of style. It’s the promise of a puzzle laid out piece by piece, a detective one step behind and one step ahead at the same time, the quiet dread of knowing the answer was hiding in plain sight the whole time. Sure, it’s a formula as old as the genre itself, and when it’s done right, it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen the pieces before. “The Whisper Man” plays with that and mostly earns the trust it’s asking for.

It’s a serial-killer thriller with more patience and craft than its Netflix-algorithm packaging lets on, the kind of movie that would have owned a Blockbuster shelf in 1998 and, three decades later, still knows exactly how to hold a room.

Source: Netflix | Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan and Robert de Niro in “The Whisper Man”

Adapted from Alex North’s novel (North being the pen name of British crime writer Steve Mosby, for anyone keeping score at home), the film opens with Detective Amanda Beck (Michelle Monaghan) combing small-town New Jersey for a missing boy. No trace of the kid turns up, but a body does, bearing an unsettling resemblance to a string of killings from 25 years back, committed by a predator the town christened the Whisper Man for his habit of coaxing children through their windows at night with a singsong rhyme that has apparently never lost its grip on local folklore. Every town has a ghost story it tells kids to keep them inside after dark. This one just happens to be true.

Into this cheerful setting arrives Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott), a widowed crime novelist who relocates with his eight-year-old son Jake (Acston Luca Porto), hoping a change of scenery will help the kid process losing his mum. Reader, it does not. Jake starts talking to someone who isn’t there, slips out into the night unprompted, and vanishes- the film’s tidy way of confirming the vibes were doomed from the moving truck.

The Whisper Man himself, Frank Carter, has been locked away for decades and isn’t going anywhere, but whoever’s taken Jake is running his exact playbook, rhyme included. So Beck needs the one man Carter will actually speak to: retired detective Pete Willis (Robert De Niro), the cop who caught him the first time around. Pete, it turns out, is also Tom’s estranged father, and has never once laid eyes on his own grandson. Somebody call a family therapist. Actually, call a cop first. The therapy can happen after the kid’s found.

De Niro doesn’t need this movie, and that’s precisely what makes him good in it. There’s no visible strain, just weary paternalism worn like an old coat, a man who’s spent decades circling the one case he never fully closed and never quite forgave himself for. It’s not a career-defining turn, but it’s a good, lived-in one, and the scenes where Pete tries to bridge the gap with a son who wants nothing to do with him cut deeper than the actual thriller plot unfolding around them.

Michael Keaton, meanwhile, drops in as Carter for a handful of scenes and quietly walks off with every single one. He’s never allowed to go full theatrical serial killer; Netflix keeps him on a short leash, but there’s a coiled menace behind those wire-rimmed glasses that pulls you forward in your seat every time he’s on screen, like watching a snake that hasn’t decided whether it’s hungry yet. We wanted more of him, which is usually proof a supporting actor did exactly what he was hired to do.

Director James Ashcroft, coming off the Sundance darling “Coming Home in the Dark” and the more divisive “The Rule of Jenny Pen,” keeps the pace brisk. The dread simmering rather than boiling over too early. At the same time, cinematographer Peter Deming (yes, the “Mulholland Drive” and “Twin Peaks: The Return” Deming) soaks the whole thing in a damp, teal-and-brown gloom that makes small-town New Jersey look perpetually one storm cloud from disaster. Colin Stetson’s score does its share of the atmospheric heavy lifting too, humming under every scene like it’s in on a secret it isn’t telling you yet.

Where the film could stand to tighten up is in its pacing; a scene or two in the middle stretch linger like a guest who doesn’t know the party’s over. But the thinness of the father-son history between Pete and Tom, a line about drinking here, a passing nod to the “original sin of fathers” who can’t protect their sons there, works more in the film’s favour than against it. Not every wound needs a flashback and a monologue to explain itself, and leaving the specifics of that estrangement in the shadows gives us room to fill in the blanks ourselves rather than having the emotional groundwork spelt out like a courtroom exhibit.

Adam Scott, for his part, is now two-for-two this year playing grief-stricken bestselling authors whose quiet change of scene curdles into horror, and if that’s shaping into a subgenre, we’re not convinced it earned a second entry. He’s perfectly serviceable here, but the role never asks for much beyond anxious-dad energy, and Scott has sharper range sitting unused in the tank.

The mystery itself unspools exactly the way you’d expect a mystery like this to unspool, complete with a suspiciously well-cast red herring who collects murder memorabilia (subtle, guys) and a third act that leans harder into pulp than the slow-burn psychological dread the film spent two acts cultivating. Ashcroft directs with a steady hand throughout, but he fumbles the landing when the plot finally comes due, like a magician who nails every trick except the big reveal.

None of which stops “The Whisper Man” from being a genuinely engrossing way to burn two hours. It isn’t going to trouble “The Silence of the Lambs” for genre supremacy, and it lacks a performance as gloriously unhinged as Nicolas Cage’s in “Longlegs” to generate headlines of its own. Everyone here plays their part well enough, and sure, a touch more intensity somewhere in the mix would have elevated things further.

But this was never trying to be that movie, and what it lacks in ferocity it makes up for in craft, executed with the quiet confidence of veterans who’ve done this dance before and know exactly where the missteps are hiding.

A strong cast doing dependable work, atmosphere thick enough to chew on, and a plot with just enough teeth to actually hold your attention rather than politely ask for it. That used to be called a good rental. Now it’s called content that performs fine in the algorithm. Either way, we had a genuinely good time, and some nights that’s all you’re really asking of a movie.

“The Whisper Man” is currently whispering on Netflix.

The Review

"The Whisper Man"

3.5 Score

A serial-killer thriller that's seen this exact rodeo before and doesn't pretend otherwise, running on a script that plays every note you expect. What saves it from being pure background noise is Robert De Niro doing weary paternalism like he was born to it and Michael Keaton making the absolute most of limited screen time, proof that sometimes all a familiar tune needs is the right two people to sing it.
